don't use them in a x-flow on the edge and expect them to survive - they will fail exactly like sly has noted.  I used them in my burnout motor and as soon as I pushed it the pistons died before the head gasket - a sure sign that they just can't handle stuff as good as the wiseco units can.

If you set them up right and don't push them they will survive - but get things wrong - even by a little bit - and they will fail quicker than an acl cast unit.

I have a shelf full of Ross pistons that have sunken in the middle exactly like sly's - all came from x-flows pushed to the limit on timing and comp.  A wiseco piston will take detonation and pre-ignition and just blow the head gasket.  Ross will just burn a hole in the piston and then you are f..ked.

Me - I'd rather change a $100 head gasket than a set of $1400 pistons - especially when the wiseco units are cheaper and better.  I'll be replacing my fucked Ross units with WISECO pistons for sure and I will never use Ross again.

I have Ross units for my roller cam x-flow and I can tell you that I will not be pushing the tune - I got the Ross units cheap second hand - made up out of a couple of sets of fucked units - and that is the only reason that I will be using them.  I am well aware of their limits and I will be very careful. If I had- my time over again I would have gone straight to the wiseco units - .060 over bore - more cubes and a better piston that doesn't fail - gotta be better.

i've heard horror stories about a lot of things.
greg's on the money. quality components, set up how the manufacture recommends = no issues.

Cam has done the seat cuts on the heads and they are very much like THOR. To the point that Cam is calling them Conan. He is doing the port work now as my business has kicked off well and I'm a bit busy to get on the grinder and do my own stuff.
Will be ready in late November so as soon as I get them home I'll throw them on the Flowbench.
After the holidays the block will go down for decking so Xmas assembly of the mighty little head Clevo is looking good.

yep. easy as piss, just back off the engine mounts a bit so you can lift the motor a touch, i've done it without doing that, but its much harder.

oil pump just get a good brand standard volume, and you'll probably find your pickup is blocked a bit too.

no need for E85 for that power.
if you are planning a full build, this is my suggestion.

    351, 20 thou overbore
6" rods, forged pistons to suit, 10.5:1 comp
alloy heads (AFD 2v will best the best bang for buck) with matching intake
    roller rockers etc
mild hyd cam (lunati 62503 will be suffice for 450ish hp/420ish ftlbs, though there is plenty of other options)
    balanced bottom end
700cfm carby, may as well order a pro systems etc to suit and save on the tuning costs later on

ignition an XD/E elec dizzy will do, just get it graphed to suit motor,  and then if you want a rev limiter get a control box...
very simple, very easy, very reliable. nothing high tech, not really much to go wrong either.

if you really want E-85, alloy heads, 12.5:1 compression and same combo, will be extremely responsive to drive, really torquey, but be prepared for obvious extra fuel burn and difficulty finding fuel at times.

    standard electronic ignition, bosch parts.
pretty rare to have failures, other than modules which you can still buy new.
HEI can be a bit unreliable at times (hot weather etc) though usually pretty damn good.

    Hey guys,

Been a while between posts but I thought I'd finally share my results of my 10yr build. Hahaha. Finally managed to get it to the dyno a week or so ago. I promise I will do a proper build thread as I have gb's of pics over the years to upload and share. I know I loved it whilst building my cars so it's only fair! With a bit of luck the trimmings and tedious things will be complete by Xmas. That's the plan anyway! To the point now...

    Xd fairmont
    Au 140km bottom end (stock)
Gas research twin converters and twin lines to twin outlet tank
    ICE ignition 7amp 2step
    Converted to run xf dizzy
Stock inlet manifold (welded and modded to run tb in fuel rail location
    Garrett 3540 (0.82 rear housing)
    External gate tial
    3 inch exhaust
    Top mount manifold (thanks Milan!)
    Killer dump pipe (thanks Wes!)
    Hybrid 3inch cooler
    Stock AU cam
    Atomic vernier gears
Cushion button clutch (sunbury brake n clutch)
Top loader with hurst verticle gate shifter (stoopid fun on the street)
Custom t-shaft (rated at 800hp from memory)
    28 spline bw 3.45lsd
    Turbo smart return flow bov

    Result: 242rwkw @11psi

Doing atomic valve springs and arp stud kit shorty pretty much built the car with more power to come later once I sort out the rest of the car how I like it. Build a short motor properly and drop it in. All the supporting hardware is there. Just cable tie the actuator vac feed and hold on Hahaha.

Would be sweet to make a thread just outlining chassis/driveline/boost/power
Hint hint forum junkies! I'm way to lazy and unreliable.

    Cheers,
    Mike

Why not forged . These day they work fine if set up with correct clearances

As for Hypers the same , correct ring caps and clearance all good .
BUT to the 6500-6800 I'd be using forged

did you add an extra few poofteenths to cater for the wear/slop in the 30year old linkages?
i would do it with a multi meter normally. lock it into Park with the column shift, make sure the linkage is adjusted on the trans and IS in Park properly. then adjust the neutral switch till the meter reads continuity in park/neutral (and reverse)

Good work on the no leaks I cant work upsidedown I did it to the ute a while ago but it was also leaking from the rear main so out it came

Thanks mate, but I love my iskys as much as u love your PSI springs. The 295ds are crackers, they are 'Tool Room' springs. Bloody awesome bits of kit. 5 years of consistent high rpm in speedway engines and only ever lose like 2-3 pounds.
I'm hearing you on the gears. I'll probably just put it together with the 3.0's and with the top loader I have. I need to check the ratio in my other 9" tho as just to know.
Head flow will be decent knowing Cam. I'll chuck them on the bench as soon as I get them back and post the figures.
Thanks again for the info and just leave the old fella from RPM. Sounds like he has earned his retirement.

Ultraflow EFI manifold, cast in australia, i used to have the guys contact details. clakos performance used to be a stockist. i was about to purchase one when i had to pull the xc off the road (read i got caught with too much badassery on the street). and i know you could get one then, that was in 2012.

ROSS make pistons to suit off the shelf.
if you are going to be pushing 6500-6800 you have the option of forged or hypereutectic pistons, cast will crack the ring landings at much above 5500.

XE274H ( or HR) are an awesome street camshaft especially for a driver with a bit of poke I know of one car that has seen high 12's with that stick (HR version) gets driven absolutely everywhere

if you dont mind taking the manifold off, just break it away with a screwdriver. piece of piss.
or if you dont want to take the manfold off, as already said, a hot screwdriver will melt the plast then you can just unscrew it out.

BEFORE YOU PUT THE BRASS ONE IN PUT SOMETHING ON THE METAL TO STOP IT CORRODING.
the amount of times i've seen brass tees snap off and been a bitch to get out....

I like to take a t45 torx bit, paint it green and put it in the blender for 90 seconds. Then I take it out, throw it through a glass door while wearing a clothes peg on my right ear. I then take the biggest shard of glass, and use it as a ninja star on the neighbour's cat. I then take the incapacitated animal, put it into a large slingshot and fire it into a flock of endangered grass parrots. But that's just me.

Sorry what was the question again?

Heat up a flat blade screwdriver with a butane torch or oxy then stick it in a melt into the remains of the vacuum tree. Let it cool and then just unscrew it out. I do this all the time on busted radiator drain plugs too.

Got a text from Wayne and the little 302 pulled 360rwhp but the smaller headers were leading to it falling over so some bigger pipes are on the cards in the future, still not power for a little Windsor.
