Defective reacted to Panko in Panko's Mk1 Escort (Round 2)
Ok,
so I ended up driving the Escort up to Sugarloaf Reservoir for the RSOCV Show and Shine. its such an amazing drive up there. It was raining most of the drive up, had a little bit of fun on the windy hillclimb road going up, just a little bit sideways haha.
credit Chris Avery for this snap
anyway, it was handling ok, but i still wasnt happy wiht it, and felt i wasnt getting the full potential out of the adjustable strut tops.
So asked about, and got some figures for what was ideal for an Escort.
I then bought one of these cheap things off eBay...
https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Alignment-Gauge-Measure-Tool-Magnetic-Garage-Caster-Camber-Kits-Strut-Wheel/322526169421?hash=item4b180ec94d:g:-gAAAOSw0hlZI-Xa
its a very basic way of giving a rough idea of setting your camber. is says it does caster as well, but i call bullshit on that one. because according to this, i have about half the positive caster i should have.
i discovered the proper caster ones are these...
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Intercomp-102043-Bubble-Caster-Camber-Gauge/111868003422?epid=1053777722&hash=item1a0bda445e:g:9KQAAOSwaA5WjcPM
anyway, i now have the car set to about -1.5 degrees camber, and as much caster i can see fit to run.
all i can say is, wow. the turn in is mad. sits flat with the adjustable shocks, turns in like its on rails, and just holds on.
now tonight, i decided to do a bit of ride height adjustment
its not sitting about 10mm off the front tyres, came down about 15mm from where it was before hand.
*sorry for the phone pics. low light and phones dont make good photos*
Ill have to do some more camber and caster measurements tomorrow to see where its at now I've done this adjustment.
The steering wobble, un-fucking-believebally is nearly gone, just by lowering the car again. WTF! its still there but nowhere near as bad. i know the steering rack is still worn out, so thats due to come out soon.

You know that with old cars there will always be something else you should be spending the money on... Just buy them.

Defective got a reaction from CHESTNUTXE in XH DOOR TRIM TO XF
I'm running xh trims in my xf, and tried for about 3 minutes to marry the two different systems up and gave up.
I now have round door lock pins in a square hole lol

Defective reacted to CHESTNUTXE in XF/G DOOR HINGE QUESTION
ok the xg i just bought needs both doors done,or would it be better to just take the fookin doors off ? i could use the hinges off the wagon i just bought are xf the same, they look the same at the front,i remember once doing a xe and it was a bastard off a job, ended up cutting the bottom one off with a thin wheel, but the xg ones look like they had improved the pins.

Defective reacted to CHESTNUTXE in PERFORMANCE GOLD 15X7
i reckon this style of wheel are shit hot and really suit xd-f as it looks really like the grand prix wheels and the BBS group c style rims used on greens tuff xe ,i guess they just copied them and made it in a smaller street version,i wonder did they ever make a 15x8 size ? i might e mail them and ask,i also have this idea of widening the rears as i can get my hands on another set to chop and weld like the snowflakes to 8-1/2 wide.

Defective got a reaction from Valvebouncer in EL GT-P 18" Wheels on XE
Falcon wheels are generally referred to as being pre-au fitment and post-au fitment.
pre au is 0- +6, so the mounting face of the wheel is basically in the centre of the rims width. Post-au is +36, so the mounting face is 36mm closer to the outside edge of the rim.
All five stud Falcons are 5x114.3 pcd.

They all have the same stud pattern right up to fgx.
The difference is in the size of the centre hub and au onwards switched the offset from rwd to fwd -
Defective got a reaction from gerg in What to look for when checking out a new motor?
Nah, il be getting an engine stand and going through replacing all the stuff that's a pain to do once it's in the car.
This won't be a quick slap together by any means.
I now need to source a manual conversion kit, pull my old motor and paint the bay plus the new engine needs to change colour too.
Soooooo anyone wanna buy a borgie five speed lol?

I've leant from real life bitter experience.... Please don't just go screwing this thing in and running it straight up. Pull it down, check everything, make sure it's clean, use decent gaskets. You can't trust other people's judgement or standard of work. Treat it as an assembled collection of parts, not a ready-to-run engine.
