stock rockers can run up to .550", but rollers are nicer on valve train.
I'd start at looking from a 214o @0.050" up. will make power from 1800-4500/4800rpm
10.6:1 will suit the 230ish cams 2300-5300rpm, I have a Camtech 510 237@0.050'' .550'' in a engine I'm building, hoping to put on the dyno next month.
    my daily runs a dynotec 214" @0.050" 495" 111LSA in a std xflow with ported weber, extractors/exhaust,
drives like a stocker but with heap more torque, till valve float around 4000 due to valve springs, & gets 11.08lt/100km highway
has towed 15 cars, & does it well (except for big hills),

slydog you forgot, its 7700 skid, 4500 transbrake, triple webers, 6x 12.0's , 1600km & similar economy to 400rwhp LS
    not too scared,just too broke.

I'm planing to build a angry 302c gerg, my plans are stuck on heads at the moment, CNC ported irons, AFD 2V's, CHI 185's
CNC ported 2V's, AED's flow enough for 550hp on a 393. My neighbor flowed some CNC 2v's on his bench at 580hp not sure what porter tho
& by pavteks cnc ported ones are 182cc intake runner
AFD's would cost about the same as irons but have a 200cc intake runner which is a bit big for a 302, tho I have a afd hirise,
CHI 185 3V's would suit it but are $2000 bare & not many 2nd hand ones about.

    doesn't look too bad...
tho I'd go a edlebrock performer, will be better every where.
you will lose a chunk of torque with a single plain manifold, a specially in a low reving combo.

the Edlebrock carby's also use metering rods,
Over your old style 4011 holley nearly just grab a cheap 1850 and give it a go, theres 3 on ebay under $100 & a kit is $50
& put a quick fuel 34-2 or 34-3 metering plate kit on, for interchangeable rear jets.

I've been thinking of changing jets, or putting another carby on my 302 as it easily uses 23lt/100km on the highway (rich & 4.11 gears),
I have Holley 465(1848) & 600(1850) Vac sec plus a new Quick fuel Slayer 600 VS(sl-600-vs), but haven't had time to try yet.
& about to start maintenance & upgrades for the AFF Drag Nats.

I know you already have an ECU but for the money this will do everything you want: http://www.haltech.com/elite-750/ and I would use the LS coil packs, guys make 2000HP with them so they do have enough juice

Here is why I think the Haltec rocks,  5 x Digital Pulsed Outputs you can use these to do a lot of cool things like:

Drive an electrical water pump based on load via maps (fans too) you will need a DC solid state relay which are awesome
    Gearbox Bump
Timing retard based on IR (use an IR sensor to monitor how much the front of the car raises from ground and retard timing)
    Zillion other things

I know you already have the ECU but it's an old one and things have moved on since then. It might sound like a lot of money to spend now but in long term it will pay for itself. You also have a lot of options to save the engine/gearbox based on temperature of oil/cyl/air etc. Your ECU has almost none of the features that is pretty much required today, I think you should sell it and add some $ and buy something that will have you achieve your goals with less headaches. You will also need logging, specially of the tailshaft vs rpm so you can really dial in the converter among other things

yeah I think your thinking right less ADV duration will make more torque
Tighter LSA will make more torque & move power band down,
