Well since you put the suit on - They're an acquired taste I think... so maybe you should acquire some taste.

Kidding of course haha. Everyone likes different stuff I guess. Personally I actually hate most of the rims that people are happy to drop a couple of grand on, so maybe I'm weird.

If you want a period correct looking wheel then I'd say globes would be the go. You can get the wider ones that the cobra boys like to stick on to fill the coupe guards. Look good on xd's too.

my 2 cents, try and clean the block up then measure it with a set of verniers if you can, you may find its already been rebuilt.
my biggest concern with a block like that is what the water jackets would be like and how much would be left after acid soaking it.

if you want to buy another engine, have a good look around, there is a lot of clevelands around and freight can be organised from interstate.
another option if you are hard pressed would be to buy an engine down here (i know of a bloke who would have plenty), send your 6" rods down here and i can point you in the direction of a very very good machinist.
don't fool yourself into thinking its cheap, id expect to pay 2K to have the block machined, a bottom end balanced and dummy assembly. minimum.

pistons etc are all easily available for a 6" rod combo too, ross, diamond, arias, precision intl etc all keep them in stock.

you can always collect your parts too then buy a block later on, everything except pistons & bearings that is, but they can just be ordered once you know what sizes you need, cam, heads, intake, carb, exhaust, etc can all be organised before hand.

don't get bogged down thinking its too big of a project either, chip away at it and eventually you'll have everything.

How bout some convos, hang on that ain't gonna work at 400 odd.

Maybe, and obviously looks shit hot on D's, globes, if you can pick them up cheap (obviously not easy), but there's two for sale on gumtree for under 200 atm, if you can find another two for the same price happy days.

Yes I can put my hand up and say my 302w build got out of hand a bit, it's the flow in of decisions that start costing you.

For example, let's get alloy heads, now need roller rockers, custom push rods, heavier valve springs.....blah blah

That was how it started for me.

Yep just got me thinking and adding up numbers, and I've spent waaay too much on my XF (been over a five year period but half of that spendings been in the last six months) doesn't matter what you doing or how your doing it if your playing with cars your gonna be spending dollars.
What ever you think you need to spend at least double that, there is always unforeseen costs, one thing leads to the next and once you start you've just gotta keep going.
Not trying to discourage anything btw, just know we all do the same thing. Worse things you could be doing with your hard earned.

I took the following that was posted by Sly from crossflow build thread Nath started (http://www.ozfalcon.com.au/index.php?/topic/4606-crossflow-build-advice/  page 3 is where this combo is), it is a very good combo that has worked, will give you the best idea on a great combo and what is needed:

Jase Stoodley ran this combo for a while before moving on. Take note those who want realistic reliable pump fuel power all for sensible money.

    Block: 80da bored & honed .030
    Crank: 250 ground & balanced
Rods: 250 machined balanced and 302w ARP bolts fitted
Pistons: ACL 21cc dish - combined with a 50 odd cc head was about 9.5:1 comp.
Cam: 230@50 530lift hydro - great cam for these motors!
Head: open chamber carby unmarked ported, 1.85" in, 1.55" exh valves, turned out it flowed 320hp
Springs: crow 7333 doubles - head needs machining for these.

Other parts included rollmaster chain, yella terra street terra bolt ons, crow pushrods, romac balancer.

Used to run a ultraflow manifold with a 500 holley went well but changed over to a cain and 600 vacuum secondaries and what a difference.

Was running a Hall dizzy with a MSD 6AL and MSD digital timing computer- the equivalent now would be a 6AL-2programmable running 36deg total timing.

    Used a 2200stall in a c4 with 3.7 rear gears.

the car was a full street car cortina ran 13.6 @ 100mph then 13.3@103 when i changed to the 600vac and made 200rwhp

    For a reasonable price anyway.

Just keep a look out on gumtree and eBay (as I know you do anyway) and if your not too fussy on style and size (eg 15 to 17 or so inch) and your main priorites are keeping it cost efective and clearing the brakes, something will come up soon enough.

Sorry mate, I just realised I haven't really helped at all.

Globes are a great look and with some patience you will find a set, they do seem to come in waves on the above mentioned sites. You may need to get them posted though if they arent all that popular in your area.
When searching also look for valiant and jeep wheels from the 90's cherokee. Also some jap old school mags will fit if you can get the correct offset, look for wheels to suit the original 86 corollas and most nissan imports.

400 isn't really the limit, I'd just rather not be dropping 2k on a set of rims when I have the rest of the driveline to build.

I love globes but they're pretty hard to find.
