    I have a 300, it's in my '72 F350.
Yes they are long and tall.
I can take photos or measurements if anyone wants.

Oh, forgot to mention. My youngest and I went to the local racetrack for a bit of a look. There was a turbo RX7 on track and it was shooting 4 foot flames out of the exhaust. Anyway, my youngest loved it!

So the XF has sidepipes and I have worked out how to program the ECU to shoot flame, just because he likes it!

Funniest thing is, one of my day jobs at the moment is consulting for the Climate Change Office on Electric Vehicle transition for local council. Hypocrisy to the max!

Absolutly Fingers. Can't tell you how many cars using more boost than the ute that are slower. Shows 2 things, wrong turbo choice and or engine combo needs work.

You dont just put "a turbo" on a stock engine and expect it to work or get the most out of it.The main reason Barras and LS engines respond to turbos is the cyl heads flow so well and there engine control/efi works well.

Mark @ JPC helped in the design of my boosted cyl head which is part of the reason it went 1.50 in the 60ft untuned with belt slip in a real 1500kg with driver street driven car. Its quite literally hp been left on the table by people using xflows, sohc, holdens and ford v8's and for the hope of saving money or been uneducated. Spend $1000 on porting and seats and valve shaping and gain a potential 100plus hp over non ported. MTOD show the difference between a stock ls turbo and a built ls turbo and the outcome was even better with a extra 300plus hp. Who doesnt want that???

Drive a modern turbo engine for evidence of what Slydog is talking about.
Instant torque and a perfectly flat torque curve (plateau/table?) from about 1500 rpm (under stall speed) to 4 or 5 thousand rpm.
Perfect drivability with great fuel economy, win win.

Compression won't kill a engine, tune will. Barras and 2js run over 10 comp. Need to talk to people who build other engines not just xflows to go forward. Or be stuck with a VHS player if you get my drift.

Aus fastest RBs run more comp than you think too. My xflow runs 11.2 comp and has seen 10psi @ 7500rpm with a big cam and big cyl head. On a small or stock headed combo with a small cam it would show ALOT more boost but wouldn't make the same hp.Boost is only a measurement of inlet restriction after all. So a bigger head with less restriction means it shows less boost but makes more hp and you use more comp which means little to no lag time if turbo is sized right.

    pretty close to perfection!
the wheels are one of the best things... if not THE best thing, you've done to that car.

As someone who’s owned a lot of escorts over the years I’ll just say you’re gonna drive yourself nuts chasing every little vibration or rattle. I learnt early on to ignore them unless they get worse.

You fix one and it just means you can hear or feel another one.

It’s looking mint now, those wheels are perfect imo

Or flip a car on its roof to pull the diff out with a forklift and a gas axe. Its like they think that the car one usefull part in it and they will just crush the rest. My pet hate was when some toss wants a stereo so they bust all the plastics out tear the door trims off and leave them lying in the dirt with the doors wide open completely destroying every part of the interior for a friggen second hand head unit.

@SPArKy_Dave probably should move all these tutorials to a dedicated thread for how to understand things working.
no one will be looking for them in an escort thread in years to come?

they will hold up if i dont drive like a dick head. ideally yes id fit an english diff, but its all money i shouldnt be spending.

it will never have a 2L fitted, but 1600 is a good chance. not big hp, just a mild cam and a single 32/36 weber. done.

    Gday
The 250 in my 89 XF ute is dying (low compression on #2 and heaps of blowby)
I have a super fuel XF Fairmont parts car that I am going to swap the engine out of as a stopgap until I get around to building a better engine (compression, cam, 4 barrel, etc.)
Am I better off sticking with the EST set up as original in the ute, or change to the electronic distributor with it's built in advance mechanism?
    All points of view appreciated

No. Hook it up to a programmable MSD 6AL2 and then you can have any curve you like and to suit any cam.
