SPArKy_Dave got a reaction from XCeed in CLEVELAND AIR CLEANERS
The Cleveland Air cleaners, are grouped into Carburettor types, and emissions vs pre-emissions vehicles.

Your pics are 1975 onwards (passenger vehicles)
F-trucks (commercial vehicles) were emissions exempt, thus the pre-emission aircleaners carried over, for a while.

The WW Stromberg carbs were fitted to XA 302, (possibly some early XB 302's),
    and mid-70's F-truck 302's also.

Pre-emissions = no charcoal canister for fuel vapours (fuel cap vented to atmosphere),
and oil cap open to atmosphere (crankcase emissions)

These vehicles with 302, had a massive mouth snorkel on the air cleaner,
Hot air intake under the snorkel but no vacuum valve, and one hose to air-cleaner body for PCV.

Post-1975 = charcoal canister, one way valve in fuel filler cap, washer bottle relocated to behind battery to accommodate charcoal canister,
and oil cap has hose to air cleaner body along with PCV hose

These vehicles used a narrower 351 style snorkel - as per the pics above.

XA 302 air cleaners were painted red, with a 6cyl style round snorkel
Early XB pre-emissions large snorkel 302 aircleaners were painted red same as XA,
Later XB pre-emissions large snorkel 302 air cleaners, were blue

I haven't quite narrowed down the paint colour change-over point, yet.

All 351 Air cleaners were painted blue.

SPArKy_Dave got a reaction from deankxf in 1995 XG bonnet
Up to March 1993 at least, all the XF's (and maybe very early XG's) used the same XF bonnet and insulation.

    Part numbers -
    XF-16612-A - Hood
    XF-16738-A - Insulator Hood Sound

At least some of the XG's (later ones or possibly all) had EDC part numbers -

    EDC-16612-A - Hood
    EDC-16738-A - Insulator Hood Sound

I have a New Old Stock XG Insulator, so can 100% confirm they are different to XF.

Don't use Bosch. Modern Bosch parts are shit quality, made cheap, and have enormous failure rates. They are nowhere near the company they used to be.

With thermostat, if not on gas check it's the correct "foot" type one - these block the bypass when the engine gets to temp. I think DT18F is the part number off the top of my head.

i bought a heap of parts from america to finish off the engine ,now just a waiting game until everything arrives, good thing is i made a friend over there who has a mountain of 400s and 429/460s,we video on messenger and he is dying for a set of 302c closed heads (lol),he finds aussie clevo stuff a real goldmine, and giving him the rundown on info about how we got the tooling from the states then started pouring our own clevo stuff was a real eye opener for him,he did not even no about the D1AE high nickel 400 block i had,he has gone on a rampage looking one in the states.amazing when you find someone on the other side of the world that is right into all the stuff you love yourself,we have already got an idea about loading his container full of $200 complete 460s and 400s as where he is there is a abundance of them,a once a year shipment should be plenty to muck around with and sell, well thats the idea at this stage ,from the info i have dug up so far its double the price of a container ATM,from what it used to be,and our dollar is poor as well, but will keep it on the backburner for the moment, probly one of the reasons its very hard to find a 460 engine latley.if the deal works out i would love a few 429s just for info sake, you no,usual strip and rebuild while photos and description.

SPArKy_Dave reacted to bear351c in 170 Log engine refresh.
So, after a coupla days on the couch with the Rona, I got back out into the shed, and finished stripping the big block 170.  Crank out, cam out, wash and degrease, kissed the lifter bores with a brake hone, and ran the 3 prong hone down the cylinders.
Angry face...!!  Punched out the little welshy, found the last one behind it.!

Cyl 3 looks like it had a water leak, or was just sitting for years with the valves open.

Look at the dodgy castings from the Sixties.. Didn't even make it a SQUARE..!    Held the gasket up and there ain't much you can do about this. The casting on the back is cut back at 45*, and you easily grind through, and 'cos this is a log manifold, the whole head then goes in the bin.

All the bits, from the guts of the engine, set out with typical ADHD fashion...

Cylinder 5 had a piece of piston ring, or a chipped valve, piece of gravel bouncing around inside. There's some damage to the piston, and the head. Nothing too serious.

.......now to make a valve spring compressor.

best way to sound awesome like a VT V8 is sell the ford and buy one.

best sounding BA 6s i've heard have been stock, because they sound awful with a loud exhaust, I'm another fan of keeping a ghia completely original.  you don't want it looking or sounding like a P plater car.. unless you are looking to make bogan friends or police attention.. save your money for more important things

the sohc 4.0 from EA to AU sound better especially with a different cam.

A Ghia is a luxury vehicle, so my advice is to keep it quiet, maybe a superturbo (chambered) muffler, if you have to.
Straight through exhausts on the non-turbo 6cyl's are terrible IMO, unless you're a P plater with a deaf-wish.

Holden 304 EFI V8's on the other-hand, can sound fantastic.
