I have a wide ratio, XF-EA T5 in mine behind a 302 and it is indeed a world class. It also has synchro on 1st (all T5s, WC or non-WC have it actually).

The non-WC has a few clues as to its identity, the main one being the layshaft bearing on the front face of the box just being a plain roller type (with bronze thrust washers inside) identified externally by what looks like a welch plug turned inside out.

The WC box has a tapered bearing here with a cast steel cap that forms the bearing cup for the race. From outside, it looks like the top of a small piston with a slight dish in it and the outer edge will be a machined finish.

Non-WC takes a light (non-EP) gear oil, and has bronze syncros.

WC takes red auto fluid and has fibre-lined steel syncros.

dipstick even used to be an issue on those things, oil cap, that other breather thing on the rocker cover to the throttle body..
wonder if it could be something that's been there the whole time causing issues with the E series ECU, like could it be a manifold gasket or the runners and the E series was better at masking it

    Big day today.
The Escort is home at last

    Covered in dust

First time washing it since December 2020 *not me in the photo*

all nice and clean at last. ready to go into its new home.

this is how you clean the inside, right? 😬 its fine, there is no interior at the moment

    Engine bay looks so pretty

In it's new home. the shed is a little squishy with the car running this way across the shed, but once i get some shelving into the shed and a bit more storage ill have space to move.

He's been around since before aftermarket parts were a thing so knows how to squeeze every last bit of performance out of factory parts while at minimal cost.

That looks very similar to a Crow 21666 (the last one I had). Same 0.050" specs. Basically one up from a towing cam, but it looks like Elgins have a much longer ramp, like an OEM one would have.

I'm pretty sure they are the same, the whole point of the 400 was to use as much tooling from the clevo as possible ie: the cam bore is the same space apart from the main journal.

    Today was a big day.
the car is finally back on its wheels after about 12 months.

Subframe and driveline looks good in there

The modified Type 9 gearbox fits perfectly, to a tee. @2redrovers
The boot is a steering rack boot to seal the shifter from crud.

Brakes well and truely fill the 13" wheels.

I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but it is at least back on its wheels and rolling.

Thanks to Peter for the following photos.
Me with my head somewhere under the car lining things up.

getting the gearbox to line up...its close, but perfect to a tee.
*cameo featuring Mark's crazy Zetec powered panel van*

Done, and on its way back down to earth. those brakes, though

last bit of spanner turning for the day

Its nice to have it rolling again, and should be home within a couple weeks.
I still have loads to do. the front seats are off getting upholstered now.
once its home the assembly can start.
I have a bit of electrical work to do, to neaten up the engine bay, couple more brake lines to make, fuel lines to make, paint the brake booster bracket, rebuild booster, paint fuel tank. lots of work ahead of me, but at least it can now come home.

Maybe the rich condition was causing a bad misfire which was showing as lean due to oxygen going through unburned?

Just a word of caution, XR-XE clevo extractors is a bit sketchy.....

    XY slightly different to XD.
    Manual steering.
    FMX trans, etc, etc.

You may have to 'modify' the extractor tubes. Pacemakers are notorious for not quite right fitment. Good pipes, Aussie made, but not direct fit.

    yeah im keen.
im in ambarvale let me know when its ready and how much you want.

dyno was a fail as it wouldnt rev over 4500rpm and the dyno operater i dont think knew what he was doing.
i think the est has a limit of 4500 so looks like im going to have to ditch it and find an xe electronic dizzy.
