2redrovers reacted to Panko in Panko's Mk1 Escort (Round 2)
the car is now up on stands ready to rip the rear end out.
I wont remove the diff this time, just give it a clean.
i will remove all the handbrake setup to give it a clean and get rid of 47 years of grime.
I decided it was too late to do the rear suspension, so instead i fitted the freshly chromed rear bar, with all brand new mounting hardware.
Now you may have noticed the boot lid is missing.
unfortunately it is back at Mark’s shop being done all over again.
There was a small amount of damage to it, after it had been painted, that had happened in the shop. So its been returned to Marks to be stripped down and repaired and painted again.

Not much progress yet.
I just took delivery of my new tools, so i can start making some good progress on the car.
I got the rear lights all fitted up.
Next step is rip out all the rear suspension and rebuild that. once the diff is back in the car, then I can start on the front of the car.

i can’t wait to get it out in the bright sun. Being metallic it changes colour in the sun. Really pops.

Big day today.
The Escort is home at last
Covered in dust
First time washing it since December 2020 *not me in the photo*
all nice and clean at last. ready to go into its new home.
this is how you clean the inside, right? 😬 its fine, there is no interior at the moment
Engine bay looks so pretty
In it's new home. the shed is a little squishy with the car running this way across the shed, but once i get some shelving into the shed and a bit more storage ill have space to move.

Mark sent these through today.
Bonnet and grill fitted and aligned.
This makes me smile seeing it look a little more like a car again

".. Hahahaha I'm a livin joke.."
That's awesome to see. Car is going to be perfection when it's done.
Wonder if that other box is back together and functional too?

Today was a big day.
the car is finally back on its wheels after about 12 months.
Subframe and driveline looks good in there
The modified Type 9 gearbox fits perfectly, to a tee. @2redrovers
The boot is a steering rack boot to seal the shifter from crud.
Brakes well and truely fill the 13" wheels.
I still have a lot of work ahead of me, but it is at least back on its wheels and rolling.
Thanks to Peter for the following photos.
Me with my head somewhere under the car lining things up.
getting the gearbox to line up...its close, but perfect to a tee.
*cameo featuring Mark's crazy Zetec powered panel van*
Done, and on its way back down to earth. those brakes, though
last bit of spanner turning for the day
Its nice to have it rolling again, and should be home within a couple weeks.
I still have loads to do. the front seats are off getting upholstered now.
once its home the assembly can start.
I have a bit of electrical work to do, to neaten up the engine bay, couple more brake lines to make, fuel lines to make, paint the brake booster bracket, rebuild booster, paint fuel tank. lots of work ahead of me, but at least it can now come home.

Relax... They run four stage Bluetooth dampers, they're just not installed yet

The only difference I'd say to that is instead of etch, use ppg epoxy (or similar) after you sand the bay. It will permanently seal the old paint and bare metal at the same time and give you a consistent base layer to work up from. The stuff I use was called ppg 408 grey-green but it's had a name change that I can't remember the new code.

Are you kidding? I can't believe they don't have a shock absorber on that design. That would have some really terrible harmonics, which I imagine would require a balance shaft, and kids we all know that balance shafts make baby Jesus cry
