Its a beast body has its own antitheft device its called the look of it...... other cars park away from it to avoid catching something and people who dont have tetanus updated arent advised to hop in it but spins on first secon and third around corners and roundys. Bugger all clutch travel in first. Brother put a lumpy cam im it a port and polish and dont know what else he done and cant ask because i got it from him after he passed so wanna supercharge it because we both spoke about doing that to our old xf utes and stealing the superchargers off dads trucks when he wasnt looking

Agree 100%. It looks daunting, but, it's not that difficult. If you can swing spanners, then you can do an engine swap, head change, cam and lifters. Just be methodical in the way you approach it. Take photos, keep the bolts with the parts you remove, or wind them back in the holes they came out of. Put them in zip-lock bags and label them, or use cardboard as VB said. You will learn soooo much, and never be afraid to ask questions, anyone here will help.  Do it when you're in a good mood, play your fave tunes, DON"T drink alcohol, and you'll love the experience.

Then you can say....." I built it myself "

It can be done in the car but it’s a pain. If you have air conditioning you will have to degas it as the camshaft comes out the front you’ll have to remove the condenser and radiator. Replace the lifters with the camshaft, this will be a lot easier to do with the head off.

Honestly, I would find the job easier and probably faster removing the whole engine and doing it on a stand. You might as well replace all the bottom end gaskets and also give it a quick hone if the bores are ok. That along with new rings and bearings means you’ll end up with a nice fresh engine

Take photos, lots of photos. Get a cardboard box, flatten it out and every bolt you take out push it into the cardboard, draw a circle around it and any others you take from the same place then write where they come from. No memory required!!

Just a bit of an update as to why the xg passenger side cable doesn't fit up nicely to the xf when doing this conversion.

The very forward most cable mounting bracket on the passenger side is 45mm further forward on the xf compared to xg. This means the cable has to travel further to clamp into the mount.  If you mount the xg cable in the xf clamp you will see that the cable doesn't runs on an angle over to the primary lever - not straight like the xg.

Next difference is the mounting pivot point for the primary lever. Yes the lever is very similar lever for xf and xg but the mounting point for the pivot is further out on the xg than xf. Again this means that the cable has further to travel to hook up.

Nkw you could stuff around and move the mounting clamp further back and also weld in the xg pivot bracket, but really it's way easier just to install the xf primary lever and longer adjuster as the others have done above.

Agree. No easier engine to learn on. It's not that hard and if you take shots on your phone you'll have a colour workshop manual to reference from.

If it has wiped a lobe (which is pretty common) you can bet the oil pump will be junk. The oil pump cops any metal dropped through the engine first. Yeah the filter will catch it after the pump has done its job, but you can bet the inside of the pump will look like a concrete mixer.

Full gaskets sets are silly cheap. Borrow or buy an engine crane and have a crack. There are some good people on here who will help you through if you get stuck.

Have you measured it to make sure it’s round though? It may be out of round down the bore. No lip is just one of the signs

If you want this 351 to make decent power I’d be checking the bored first. There is no point buying rings if it needs a rebore then new pistons and rings

Boss motor would be cool, but with all the good alloy heads out there it wouldn’t be worth it really, not on those cubes in my opinion. Kaase P38 Windsors heads...search them.

did you try auto surplus? if you have the ring thickness, depth and bore size.. it's probably all they need(might be off a chev for eg)

Auto Surplus are awesome, they only sell quality stuff. I buy all my gaskets through them.

i've had pistons machined to take a thicker ring when the groove was worn..(from revving too high with ridge worn on the bore) (should have bored it and new rings..no money problems)

think the rings i got from auto surplus in mitcham, they still exist 20+yrs later (https://www.autosurplus.com.au/ ) wouldn't surprise me if they know what you want and have it?
