c4 kickdown lever????

Recommended Posts

Just put a new 570 holley and intake on my 302. Was going to install a kick down cable as there is none. Got the cable and went to put it on. The kick down lever on the trans has no spring tension on it you can just wiggle it back and forth???? The guy I bought the car off said the trans had been rebuilt and everything works good. He said it had been shift kitted does this have anything to do with it. Cheers

um you got an issue that should have a spring back action, just fitted a lokar kit to my 250-c4 setup, little tweaking needed to trans brackets and weber linkage but now works perfect!

Do you actually need the kickdown linkage? Please explain to the uneducated!

sorry to dredge up an old post but..I would be interested in an explanation to this???

I don't have a kickdown on mine and was looking at fitting one.

I'll try and explain the best as i can here:

Transmission kickdown happens when trans is "forced" to drop back a gear. Say your going up a hill and you want to pass someone, it drops down a gear when you floor it or when its under a heavy load etc. I use the kickdown rod on my XD. You can run it without i heard that they work ok without them. The kickdown rod is not needed when the auto is fully manualised. If you cant sauce a kickdown rod Lokar make a kickdown cable which will also work fine.

If your running a holley carburettor that has the Ford trans kickdown arm fitted, you'll need to fit the spring perch kit. Holley part no. 20-91. If your going from 2 barrel to 4 barrel you will need to extend the kickdown rod. Holley part no 20-41. Or alternatively you can fit a kickdown cable or fit the longer kickdown rod.

I understand how the kickdown works...just don't understand why you would remove the 'automation' of an automatic gear box! (isn't that what manual gear boxes are for?)

the 'manualisation' of mine by whichever of the previous owners is probably the reason why the gear shifter has more play in it than a porn stars flange!!!

Quick shift of the auto with no clutch + changes gears exactly when you want it to where as if your driving an old school auto without tiptronic you don't get full control of the gear changes.

Necessity of the conversion depends on the use of the car, apparently auto's also tend to be a stronger box, I know of a kingswood that blew a few manuals before going auto.

The whole idea of the kick down is to get the engine into the best power band for acceleration as opposed to trying to lug it in a higher gear. The only way the gearbox knows when you're accelerating and by how much is via the kick down and/or vac modulator (when fitted). It also puts the engine at a speed where the torque converter has much less slippage than at lower rpm, preventing the fluid from getting hot due to friction.
