Ok, guys UPDATE, The XF went from the Mechanics to the AUTO ELECTRICIANS today. Got a call from him 1 and a 1/2 hours later, It seems like its the TPS..It is not working, and he has ordered another for 2 morrow...I think I LIKE THIS GUY...Hopefully this will solve the problem...STEREO, SECURITY SYSTEM AND GPS TRACKING SYSTEM NEXT....Thanks to EVERY ONE FOR THEIR REPLIES AND INFO ..It is hard to diagnose something BLINDLY , so yes, THANK YOU ONE AND ALL...Wish I knew how to load the PHOTOS ON HERE...

    A google got me here:
    https://www.diyautotune.com/support/tech/install/ford/ford-eec-iv/

But i thought i saw another mod had done one that was even more "Plug n play" and i'm pretty sure the XF used Ford EEC-IV ECU but get someone to confirm.

    Also here:

There are 2 screws on throttle body. One sets the butterfly so it never closes completely and this is to stop the butterfly "sticking" in the closed position. Aka it improves pedal feel.  The other is an air bypass.
For tuning idle both the pip wire and the iac should be disconnected as both will alter the idle speed. And the eng should be fully warmed up.
If eng is fully warmed up and the iac is still altering idle speed, (and ac is off) then that leads me back to the clt sensor as possibly faulty.
A wideband sniffer can be used for adjusting the afm.
And why are they playing with the knock sensor? Just unplug it if you think it's an issue and it will stop interfearing with the tune.
I have never had the knock sensor cause any issues (and I've had a lot of issues) and tbh i don't know if they even worked from factory.

I know what does work. An aftermarket ecu. And all future eng issues can usually be diagnosed by plugging in a laptop and "oh, the ECU isn't getting 'x'. So I'll fix that"
You can also enjoy better fuel economy and can fuck off the pesky afm and say hello to a couple extra ponies. All without changing the appearance at all if you are tricky and gut the afm and leave it installed.
I think they make plug in megasquirts now that use the factory harness and connector. Just add EGO and a MAP line.

isn't the IAC the thing that sets idle speed?

so they know where the knock sensor is right?
on the front left corner of the head (exhaust side) those wires should go back to the ECU.

I really want to keep the car original, True there are Mods which will make the car, BETTER, but then it wont be what it was..Going to try the 95/98 fuel first then get the Mechanic to check the timing , maybe change the spark plugs again after they were all sooted up..

    what petrol is in it?
i haven't had EFI XFs, but carby ones wouldn't crank over when the ignition was advanced enough to ping on 98 fuel(i haven't had one ping on 98 fuel that could crank over fine)

If the capacitors in the ECU have never been replaced, they will very likely need doing, as they have a 10yr 'rated' life.
I'd still get the ECU bench tested by Cooldrive/Logicar,
or equivalent repair place, as bad capacitors will cause oddball running faults.

@SPACK  are you the owner of the XF Dick Johnson SVO?

If so, i think i have said to you on facebook, your ECU will be unique to the car because it would've had to modified in some way to suit the big cam profile and various other tricks they did to get that engine to produce the figures it does.

Bloke at work offered me an xf efi motor the other day and I considered putting it into my xf sedan that’s currently carb fed but I think it’s more hassle than it’s worth adding the extra bits to get the efi working. I might put the later crank in it being it’s an 86 block and gain the extra 30kw some other way than efi. It doesn’t get driven much so maybe a really lumpy cam would be the way to go. I hope your problems get sorted soon mate, it’s frustrating me and I am not paying the mechanics

    hopefully not too painful,
they can go really well when good.. a manual efi falcon was quite quick for back in the day.

hopefully the current mechanic isn't going to charge excess cost for unfixed/undiagnosed issues.. but you've probably learned all you need to know by this "lesson" either way.

I have been in touch with a company at BRENDALE, COOL DRIVE, they do check the computers for these cars, and if necessary repair, however, it has to go through a Mechanic forms have to be filled out. Rang a " older, established" AUTO ELECTRICIAN  and he said, after I explained to him my problem, that it should not be too hard to solve, SEND the car over...SO.....lets see...lol

good luck, please let us know what it was if you find out.

back and find out about the rest of the issues to fix up as you get around to it.. like the door handles, break because the door hinges need reco/ bushing etc.

The computers are the same between Auto/Manual but different between leaded/unleaded, are you 100% they've been the right computers?

It is normal for them to idle without the AFM connected - or least mine does, from memory. Not as smooth as with it plugged in.

I'd be checking earth's and wiring. Has the dash been out before? The ECU wiring runs behind the dash, maybe it's been damaged somewhere out of sight?

OUT BACK JACK, I am not getting shirty with any one here, Dont know where you got that Idea from,  as a matter of FACT, I am learning from each and every one here that has an input to my problem....The only thing, REALLY that has changed, are the INLET AND EXTRACTORS which I had CERAMICLY COATED, to try and cut the heat down, 1, burning out my solenoid on the starter, and heat going to my AFM..

Mate... just go to a wreckers get a second hand ecu and plug her in.
Just make sure its the right one.
The workshop manual should give you the numbers for the specific one for your car. Make sure its correct to that and not the obe in car.
Its a cheap way to diagnose that problem. Cost ya $50.

I know its not a 4.1 but on my 4.0 when the aircon wouldn't work was actually blown high/low idle on ecu.
    Secondhand ecu..... done.

My xfn book only covers carb models. Pre fuel inj model book.
