Not always true but a general guide for e series diff ratios (you could order any ratio in any car when they were new but very few had different gears) this is generally from eb to el, early ea's still ran xf style diffs and ratios until the 4 speed autos were available
3.08: standard e series ratio gli sedans and futura mostly had this ratio
3.23: common ratio for fairmont, wagon, xg and xh utes base model fairlane V8 falcons (including xr8 up until el)
3.45: (almost all 3.45 diffs were lsd) xr6, el xr8, 6 cyl fairlane ghia, 6 cylinder fairmont ghia, manual 1 tonne xg and xh utes, outback utes (outback's had the hydratrack diff)

Agreed I've fired up engines in way sketchier situations last one I did i fired up my xflow balanced on bricks, radiator hoses are usually stiff enough to hold a radiator in place, I have cable tied a radiator to a chair once to stop it moving -

You can use a 6 cylinder t5 on a single rail or top loader bellhousing using an adapter, the 6 cylinder t5 has a longer input shaft than a v8 top loader or single rail, all e series t5's are about the same strength, hp doesn't really kill t5's torque does a mild 302 in front of one in a light car like an xp should have a pretty decent service life, the only reason to chase up a factory V8 t5 set-up would be for the left hand starter but then that restricts off the shelf header/exhaust manifold fitments on the passenger side and limits you to a cable style clutch -

That wasn't my experience Thom, my combo consists of an EA T5, very old mechanical toploader bell drilled and studded to suit, and standard 351 clutch. Input shaft on my T5 was the same length as the single rail that came out, 6 and 8 cyl types, only mod was to skim 1.5mm off the diameter of the input bearing retainer (snout) to fit into the smaller hole in the bellhousing.
This same T5 box lived in my EF and my EA before it, both of them 6s.

Could be a couple of simple things, you may have knocked the plug or ignition lead off the coil, pretty easy to do when messing with the starter

Watching The Skid Factory (youtube) I've seen them use heat gun to winkle up the winkle paint,
*after a bit of looking back through your thread, as a temp exhaust, cut through the expanded part on the collector & rotate to the left (guessing 4-7mm) then reweld, should work
Those extractors also look to tapper down to fit in that small "collector" that looks to just be a flared bit of pipe from when they were made,
if so, I'd cut them back where they are still round (maybe extend the secondary's a bit & put a pair of mandrel bends from where you cut) then put a twin 1 ?/?" in to 2" out collector, also with the extractors does the 4th cyl pipe go into the side of the 1st cyl, or is the collector just hidden by 2&3 (hard to tell from photos).
As to pipe size Vs engine as a EG. VE SV6 3.6lt has 2 1/4" twin from factory, 1800cc per bank, so 2" will be fine for a 1660cc.
also to 2" single on 4.1, from memory BF E-gas utes have 2 3/4" exhaust, & EA onwards were always 2 1/4".

Thats a good point, the stray radiator i have for start-ups has a electric fan on it -

Yeah that jogs my memory after reading about Argentine Fords. Quite the parallel to Ford Oz in that they did their own thing and achieved a lot in a very small market.
I'll bet the Argentine Y-blocks are the holy grail for hotrodders
