i don't think it would need the the air box fitted.

if it's only firing up then stalling, try holding the key on crank a bit longer to see if it runs with the key on cranking.. (might be ignition switch issue even?)
this might have something to do with the fuel pump relay even? not sure.

He Swapped it for a VW Bug Convertible. I Nearly had a seizure.Rule No.1 Look after yourself and let others crawl their way up if they want to.Thanks for the help mate.S.

First On Race Day? or found on rubbish dumps ? Full Of Rust & Dents?

My XE and XF crossflows used to do 40,000kms a year with nothing more than oil changes and ball joints/idler arms and tyres

i have avoided a lot of newer cars after seeing so many dead cars on the side of the road and working with 300 people at work and seeing their newer car issues.

Yes you can use the au head an associated parts as long as the au isn't a variable cam timing engine, I found out alot about these engines from some old speedway guy's and about 10 years ago when I was and apprentice with not alot of cash I wanted to build a hot 4.0 for my xh so I spent my weekends at pick a part and places like that pulling apart 4.0s just to find put all the differences between them all, after about 6 months of "research" I ended up building a 4.0 out of mostly stock parts mixed and matched from ea to au and it made 183kw at the rear wheels it was a blast, if you look up my 4.0 thread there's alot of info in there from myself and other members on 4.0 sixes

Just about to commence an AU 4.0L conversion and starting to get some parts together.

So far ive got an AU1 motor complete running out of my ex daily and i just scored an EF Tickford head for the princely sum of 100 coin complete with everything.... cam, valves, rockers, cover the lot. I also have access to the rest of the EF XR6 motor so is there anything else i should grab before is slips by???

Got an AU T5 bell waiting to be picked up aswell... dont have a decent T5, only the XF one thats in the ute now but im hoping with some tender care it should hold for at least a while until i can build a better box.

Aslo picked up a set of PH4495 pipes to suit a barra that i was going to modify the bolt flange to fit the SOHC head... they are pretty damn close except for the top row of bolts so its either cut the whole flange off and tig another back on or try to manipulate this one. Or sell the damn thing and spend the coin on an AU set yet.

Plans are the eventually supercharge it so while i might go with the EF head with more comp initially i might keep hold of the AU head and do that one for less comp around the 9.0:1 max mark to get some room for boost.

Ok so a few people have been chasing info on 4.0ls lately, so over some period of Time I will start posting what I know about 4.0ls as I have played with them for years , this first post is taken directly from a post i made in ph351's thread earlier today,
Ef and early El are the same, late El.used a Au style head and crank, without the longer con rods (if you see an El engine with the prefix wr2axxx cat into it it's an Au style head with 1.8:1 ratio rockers compared to the earlier 2:1 ratio) and the camshafts don't interchange between the two ratios, Ef or El cam be set up for a distributor or coil packs (ea- can also be setup for coil packs but it requires a Ef/El timing cover, also to change from v belts to sepentine belt requires Ef/El timing cover and balancer *note v belts cannot be used with a Ef/El timing cover with stock brackets) pre Au: ea's have the strongest rods, ef's have the best crank (12 counterweights compared to 8 on all other e series) Ef/El blocks are better as they have oil restrictors in the top of the block to prevent to much oil in the head at high rpm (makes for more stable valve train above 4000rpm) ea cam is the biggest for made for a 4.0l (except xg xr6 but good luck finding one) and cannot be used on a Au without custom rockers, xr6 head use standard intake valves with a larger exhaust valve, they were also a different casting from a standard head with similar intake Ports but a much better exhaust port (the best xr6 heads to get have the casting no 93dt and 94Dt, the best of the non xr6 heads have the casting 94da). Au egas engines use better crank and rods than a standard petrol engine (also slightly higher comp, and an Ef xr6 head on an Au egas short nets 10:1 comp) Au engines can take a BA turbo crank and rods without machine work, Au rods are longer than e series with a hypertectic pistons (same advantage as using 3.3 rods in a 4.1 or 302 rods in a 351) a really nice Combo (what some of you will remember I had in my xh) is Au egas short motor, Ef xr6 head, ea cam, El intake with a set of extractors and a tune made 178 rwkw for less than $600

Hi searley, you’ll get the hang of quoting on the forum soon 🤣🤣!
In all seriousness, most of use have been playing around with these old shot boxes for too many years, it’s our passion! I myself am a mechanic and have quite a few friends that have the same ford addiction as myself so we learn off each other and help each other. Many hands makes light work as the saying goes. Also working in our favour is that Ford is either lazy or really smart depending on which way you look at it. For example: they used the same tailgate on the falcon Utes from the xa in 1972 up until the end of the xh in 1999. Things change slowly so a lot of parts are interchangeable between models, it’s all trial and error. Once you get known for your addiction people will start feeding it by giving you their old car, ask me how I know this!

As for your question on coil pack v single coil for the sake of ease of conversion you can stick with a single coil and distributor, just buy a quality coil ( think Bosch), it will last longer. Converting to a coil pack will be a massive effort. You will need either an ef or au computer along with the entire wiring harness as there is an additional row of output pins on the computer to control the coil pack. Not to mention headaches with the smartlock system. A j3 chip to get around it would keep the a/c compressor constantly engaged with au falcon computer but you would get sequential injection and cylinder shutdown technology ( for overheating protection ) as a bonus.

Use the head cam and rocker gear off the au if you are going to use that head but still use your original intake, injectors, sensors and wiring loom, I wouldn't worry about trying to change to coil packs as that is a mammoth undertaking involving re wiring half the car to do itYou'd need to have the sump modified on the au engine to fit as it would hit the k frame, it's also a massive pain in the arse to get the tensioners and accessories to work together when you mix and match au and xh together as the xh stuff is unique to xh and the au stuff doesn't interchange without hitting the sub rails in the car (ask me how I know)

Greetings Mr.ValveBouncer,Thanks For The Experienced Knowledge. If The Block Has To Be Machined I Assume That The Motor Has To Come Out.Funny Thing I Took The Head To Be Tested And Shaved To Places That Have The Equipment And Used To Do Them But They Don't Do That Work Anymore Because It's Not As $Profitable. When I Took Off The Rocker Cover All The Heads Were On The Bolt But The Last 2 Bolts At The Rear Of Motor Were Incredibly Tight/Hard To Undo.Anyway I'll Take The Head To A Proper A Head Place Get It Tested & Shaved And The Block As Well,Permaseal AU Gasket,Permaseal Head Bolts & Hylomar, etc.Once Again I Appreciate Your Input. It's Nice To Have Success When Fixing Stuff.Best Regards Searley.
