Dane1616 9 Posted October 8, 2015 Hey I've recently brought a xh ute 4.0l auto I'm getting 260-280km to 50liters of fuel. So far I changed coolant, thermostat, temp sensor, O2 sensor, injectors, fuel filter and plugs and leads. There has been no change in the fuel economy If anyone can help would be great. Cheers Dane
slydog 7,873 Posted October 8, 2015 TPS switch and have you measured the fuel use or just going off the odo?
Dane1616 9 Posted October 8, 2015 Yer just going off the odo it reads accurate. Ive have tested for codes though the obd plug with test light only code is a running rich. I will try getting a tps switch tomorrow. Thanks mate

Thom 6,654 Posted October 8, 2015 How hot does it run, if it's not warming up properly it will be stuck in cold start mode and run rich all the time 1 slydog reacted to this
Dane1616 9 Posted October 8, 2015 Yer I was running cold all the time when I got it found the thermostat was stuck open I then changed the thermostat and flushed engine and put coolant it. Temp runs about half on the gauge since i changed thermostat and coolant. 1 Outback Jack reacted to this
SPArKy_Dave 8,890 Posted October 8, 2015 Hey I've recently brought a xh ute 4.0l auto I'm getting 260-280km to 50liters of fuel. So far I changed coolant, thermostat, temp sensor, O2 sensor, injectors, fuel filter and plugs and leads. What about the IAT sensor? Also, I would be picky about what O2 sensor I used. NTK is supposed to be the most accurate for the OHC falcons. Some of the others have been known to have poor tolerances out of the box. I would also suss out the Fuel Pressure Reg. 1 Thom reacted to this
Outback Jack 6,352 Posted October 8, 2015 It will be that thermostat, now its fixed try do a new fuel economy test. If the ute is not at full operating temp when your doing your fault code test that will be your 'rich at idle'. Do you do a throttle goose before you test anything? Also run your code reader 3 times just to check codes re occur the same. My ute gets about 14L/100km real world economy. About 700km to 100L. Bridge out test pin and earth under dash on left of test plug and check your base timing is at 10 degrees..... just to be sure... Jack.
Dane1616 9 Posted October 14, 2015 Yer done all that just changed IAT sensor and TPS. I'm currently doing a fuel economy test I have checked timing and triple checked codes and logs the running rich code. Cheers

XG's are 10degrees BTDC, but I know EL's (and possibly XH's) are 0degrees BTDC base timing. 1 Bill Wilson reacted to this
Outback Jack 6,352 Posted October 14, 2015 Worth a check. Sorry if Im wrong Dave. I always though xh was same as xg as was same obd system. If everything checks out may want to look for clutch slippage or brake/wheel bearing drag. I will say though... if you like driving with a heavy right foot the fuel economy of these motors goes downhill fast. Lol. I should get 1000km from my duel tanks...126L .... Never even been close. Jack.
bear351c 10,273 Posted October 15, 2015 Fill her up at the same servo, second click. Drive for 100 kms. Back to same servo, same pump, second click. Accurate way of getting litres used. Changed air filter etc,..?
SPArKy_Dave 8,890 Posted October 15, 2015 Worth a check. Sorry if Im wrong Dave. I always though xh was same as xg as was same obd system. If everything checks out may want to look for clutch slippage or brake/wheel bearing drag. Definitely worth checking. If it's auto, also check the transmission engine braking is working properly. The C4 clutch can sometimes drag in the transmisson - causing slight issues/slugishness etc. The main effect, is loss of engine braking when going down hills and such. Dane1616 9 Posted October 17, 2015 Hey yer I fill up at same servo every time. Dave there is no sign of transmission engine brake and is real sluggish taking off is there a way to check / test? it also slips or drops out of gear between 3rd and 4th I have to back off the throttle or it just revs and goes no where. Cheers
Outback Jack 6,352 Posted October 17, 2015 Daves hit it on the head then. Ya belts are slipping in ya tranny.. and thats not a caitlin jenner joke. How ya supposed to get good economy if the power cant get to the rear wheels? Get ya gearbox serviced and belts done if needed. Jack. 2 Bill Wilson and Nath reacted to this
Dane1616 9 Posted October 18, 2015 Yer I've serviced it on Friday has made a difference shift gears ect and currently on fuel economy test Thanks for the help 1 Outback Jack reacted to this

RAWDEAL 222 Posted October 18, 2015 How hot does it run, if it's not warming up properly it will be stuck in cold start mode and run rich all the time What temp should these engines run at? My ed has a set thermo switch in it (tridon one) and runs on the colder side of the guage.. and uses shitloads of fuel lol AFAIK everything else is all good. i havnt scanned it for codes though
Dane1616 9 Posted October 18, 2015 Hey mate it runs on the lower side as well around the "m" and "a" on the "normal" writing. Is the different temp sensors. I will let you all know how I go. Cheers

Outback Jack 6,352 Posted October 18, 2015 Got to be a little careful when going off guage position for actual temp. That is the sender and the actual reading of the temp for the computer is from the coolant temperature sensor. (The big one). Sometimes it could be wrong sender installed for guage. Mine runs in the normal box just above the lowest line of the box..... but has been tested in workshop and by me on code reader and ute checks out A OK. Also a tip..... NO thread seal tape on sender or CTS. Just use sealant. Can be a bit tricky to pin down but worth doing. Jack.
Dane1616 9 Posted October 23, 2015 Yer temp is fine tested with second test temp gauge and still no change in fuel economy. The Ute might be up for sale soon as it's costing me to much to get to work and can't find the problem. Cheers
