smiddo 14 Posted June 1, 2014 Any brake gurus out there? When I bought my car it had no brakes at all, pedal would go straight to the floor, rang around nearby brake specialist described the symptoms and was told definitely a dodgy master cyl. There was a bit fluid inside the booster so thought the rear seal must've shit itself so forked out for a new master. Bolted everything up and just tried to bleed and can't get any pedal at all and no fluid moving outta the bleed nipples, maybe the diaphragms are farked in the booster, any ideas or advice?? Should I at least have some sort of resistance/pedal feel straight away.
bear351c 10,273 Posted June 1, 2014 Brake booster diaphragm works on vacuum, so wont do much without engine running. Should be able to pump fluid through, but, if line is completely empty EG: all the way from master cyl to rear brakes, then you will probably empty the reservoir, before the pedal gets firm. Remember to only crack open the bleed screw a couple of mm, or air will be dragged back in. Always keep an eye on the reservoir level. Use a air operated break bleeder if you can scrounge one up. Not sure how talented you are, but, this is usually a 2 man job, and a 6 pack. 3 pumps up and down, hold to the floor. Crack open bleed nipple for a second or two. Lock it back up. Release pedal. Repeat. Not suggesting you don't know this, just unsure how much experience you have. Let us know how ya get on, matey. Ha ha ha ha hah.......I wrote "nipple". That's so rude. 2 Outback Jack and XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this

hendrixhc 10,921 Posted June 1, 2014 I bought a $12 one man bleed kit. Worked well and i recon i had the whole job done under and hour. Went through 2 and 1/2 bottles of fluid to all the air was out. The booster wont have much play on the feel of the pedal when your bleeding. I did have to put a lot of pressure on the pedal and hold it down for a bit to acheive the flush. Pedal was spongey til ihad done all four. Remember order of bleed is drivers rear, passenger rear, passenger front, driver front.
smiddo 14 Posted June 1, 2014 Yeah initially tried the order but had nuthin, took the master cyl off to make sure I hadn't left the pushrod out - all good - then used the phone video to make sure the booster was moving the rod - all good, bled the mcyl by using a socket ext till I got fluid outta the ports, bolted back up but still no fluid outta the rears, cracked the fronts for the hell of it and got fluid and a bit of a pedal but bad light and dinner beat me, will persevere with the bleeding tommorrow and hope for the best, cheers and thanks 1 SPArKy_Dave reacted to this
Stevemack 122 Posted June 2, 2014 Make this up, A 600ml coke bottle or similar, a piece of rubber hose that fits snug over the nippless, then poke hole into lid and insert hose. Fill with 1/3 brake fluid. When you crack the nipple, put the hose on and then pump to your hearts content, won't suck air in but will get it out. Keep an eye on the fluid though. You will be able to tell when you are getting fluid through cos your bottle starts filling up. Then when no air bubbles do up nipple and remove hose, done, move to next nipple. Oh you should also start the bleeding at the nipple furthest away from the master cyl. Good luck.
hendrixhc 10,921 Posted June 2, 2014 Thats pretty much how the one man brake bleeding kit works! The coke bottle idea is good though cause it costs bugger all and has a larger capacity.
smiddo 14 Posted June 2, 2014 Yeah thanks gents know all that, just wasn't working! See my build thread, I was simply just trying to get the brakes working in order to move the car but have now taken a step backwards (for the better) and replacing wheel cyls, pads/shoes new drums cos they were oversize when measured today and caliper kits. The pistons were stuck and not moving at all, anyway it'll be mon next week now before I'll get the time to replace everything, toyed with the idea today of replacing the pbr cast iron calipers with xf girlock a but did manage to get the pistons out and waiting for the kits to arrive.
