winton got a reaction from slydog in To tub or not to tub
Cheers I'm in sa.
I had though maybe I could fold it.
Will probably go a head and tub it. Thinking as long as u do it neat it won't ever get noticed.

There is definitely gains to be had. My mates 66 mustang could only cop a 245 to 255 on a 17x8 custom offset wheel and the diff cut down to fine tune to the last mm to get them under. The original tubs were also spliced and modified in one section also to try and gain a bit more clearance . When we first done the paint and panel he talked himself out of doing it then regretted it after eventually cracking and then we had to chop up a very shiny and pretty mustang to give it the look he had wanted all along. We split the tub added a 40ish mm strip down the centre and went flat to the rail. It now takes a 285 on a 19" wheel with ease. If you do it neatly with precise cuts so your not trying to fill big ass gaps with welds that end up looking like shit, seal it all up nice and use some common sense about how to retain the strength of the rail it is definitely worth while.

Its only steel and if your fitting a shorter diff may aswell bang a strip of metal in there bro.

I can't see any benefit really, but I don't want to put the car back together and say to myself wish I had that extra 30mm now.
Was thinking maybe there's a reason im missing other then then to say "its been tubbed" .
The diff I'm fitting is 30mm shorter each end so the track will be out anyway.

winton reacted to ando76 in THOR
Ok time to start a thread on THOR, my idea of the ultimate aspo crossflow. This is the engine that will be powering my new TD Cortina drag car venture.
Here is a brief run down on THOR's specs;
Triple 45mm webers (soon to be converted to E85)
Tighe - Solid roller cam
Heavily ported C2A head
86da block
Modified EF crank
Ross Forged 200 rod pistons
Spool Forged 200 conrods
Anyway I have had this formula in my head for a long time and I collected all the bits and pieces and now its time to assemble the monster that will become THOR.

Ok so clearly my concept of 'later in the week' and actual time is way off. Anyway here she is. Just the fuel line to sort and the power steering crank pulley to mount (sure I've got a 3 bolt balancer one here somewhere)
The headers are just for the photo - not using them on this engine - they belong to my roller cam engine.
First carb of the rank is the 'Keith Dorton Special' 350 Holley on a 1/2" open hole spacer. As you can see I made the carb studs long enough to try a couple of different spacers. Second up will be the Aussiespeed 2 hole 1" spacer. But don't hold you breath waiting for me. I'm frightfully unreliable due to paying work having to take priority.

"On todays episode of Australian Cortina ......"
Did some more work on the intake manifold. Firstly I wanted to remove the brackets and bungs that were cut or molded into it. I'll put some bungs for vacuum lines etc later into the back of it, so its much neater for plumbing. So what I did, I cut the peices off with the grinder and then shaped and used those peices as plugs to plug up the holes. It worked a treat. Yes it was tedious work, but its the same material so I though it would work best. I just welded the top of it close to the surface and then filed them smooth.
I then decked the ends of the runners that meet up to the injector manifold. I got some 80g emerycloth and nail it to the bench, then spray it with WD40 and then pushed the manifold back and forth along it. 4 hours later, I finally had a decked set of runners. Dead flat now and butt up perfectly. I decked the injector manifold while I was at it.
Did some porting of the runners as due to being cut into so many peices, they had overlaps and all sorts of stuff. Using a combination of the allow burrs and the metal burrs, along with an extension for the die grinder, I finally got some decent results, I think! 6 hours in this one. OOFT!
And this is what it looks like now. I did some work on the fuel rail also, but I'll go into more detail later after I get the bungs for the ends put on etc.
Next I'm going to pressure test the manifold, just in case, and then see if I can get it flow tested at RPM Motorsport with Steve. I might need to make the throttle body elbow first, but I'll see what he says. Also finish off the fuel rail.

Just fit the drum on the axle backwards, start the car put it in h and hold a grinder to the drum till you have clearance.

Good thing you didn't have to hammer the shit out of the shims to get them in (I assume). I've heard of someone smashing a shim trying that.
Did you check backlash and/or tooth contact? Doesn't have to be perfect but if it's way out, that's another noise created. I just use a bit of spray paint on the crown teeth and wind it over a few times back and forth to see the tooth pattern.
