Transmission fluid

Recommended Posts

A question for the specialists out there. We are in the process of removing a auto trans from a au ford which has clocked 345 thousand. Now it worked ok changing ect. as it should h  Some oil from the oil lines on trans drained out and is black in colour with no hint of being red. So has anyone seen this before and if they replaced filter an oil  did the transmission last long. Don’t want to reinstall it in my ute only to have it f,,,up. in a short time   Any thoughts. advise please

My 2 cents - if it works, it works.

BTR's can be finicky things, when not maintained.

I've directly experienced ones playing up under 200,000km, and others still be working fine at over 600,000km

If it were mine, I'd probably remove the valve-body to check the B1 and B2 band clearances and re-shim if needed.

Then if within spec, I'd re-assemble, change the fluid, and re-install the trans.

If a BTR's B1 band can't grip the drum to stop it spinning when commanded, the trans will lose 2nd and 4th gear.

In my experience, second hand BTR's almost always have faults, despite what any seller says.

I regard them, as rebuildable cores.

Hi sparky. The tranny in question is from my own au  which I have owned for 14 plus  years is dedicated gas and drove ok. Problem was our local servos stopped selling gas and handed in their gas ticket. Trying to save a dollar thought I would use tranny into my xg ute. So I guess it’s. How long is. a piece of string.   Interested to know more about/how. To check existing auto re your reply b1 band. Maybe I could get someone that could look at xg an fix it instead of replacing it.   Sorry about the lengthy reply

cheers Demmo

Not long after I bought my mother an AU I got the gearbox serviced. Apparently the oil that came out was like old diesel engine oil.
Mechanic was amazed it drove as well as it did.

Got about another 40,000 from it before the trans died (350,000 all up).

Put a second hand box in with low 100,000kms, filled with Penrite ATF FS and it's been fine for the 50,000kms or so it's done since.

i'll give My 2cents worth also,

i was told with My lexus LS400 to change the fluid 1 litre at a time, drain 1 litre, add a new one litre .. reasoning, new fluid washes the GUNK out of it's hiding hole and blocks things up..

i did the lexus like this, no issue 80,000kms later (oil was disturbing also)

nissan pulsar i had, changed fluid in one go..  dead in a week.

2 different transmission service dudes said, check the pan, if it's full of "material" (soot like stuff) it's probably worn out.  don't touch it.. (aka don't change the oil)

reco BTR already removed from the car might be reasonable, the major expense is the labour. .. they may not warranty it if not fitted by them? might be worth asking though.

I fitted an transmission oil temp gauge. Both to use the sender as a drain plug and monitor overheating . About 1.5L is drained each time I change the engine oil as well .

why do you do the 1.5 litres at a time thing?

It is all that comes out when the front wheels are up on ramps. The temp sender is on the front edge of the pan.

I also run two A/C fans and two engine fans , both with an override switches which I flick on if the auto is too warm.

Heat and dirty oil destroys autos I read somewhere .

makes you wonder why they don't have a proper filter in the cooling system at minimum.
