CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 18, 2016 Why did ford make 3.23 and 3.27 they seem so close ,i think the 3.27 only came in EB and ED ?
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted March 18, 2016 3.23 is the older ratio, used in upto XF. 3.27 I believe is the E series ratio.
XTREME KARTS XF 1,212 Posted March 18, 2016 My brothers old ED Fairmont had the 3.27 diff ratio and EllieJanes XG S pac does too, iv found that there is no real difference between 3.23 and 3.27. My XH V8 has the 3.23 ratio as it was originally auto.
slydog 7,873 Posted March 18, 2016 3.23 is a small 575 gear set the 3.27 is to suit the larger 578 of the E series car.
CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 19, 2016 I have a 1996 LTD DIFF HERE AND IT IS A 3.23 0578,THE DIFF IN MY XE IS OUT OF A 5.0L EB AND ITS A 3.27 4 PIN LSD.
slydog 7,873 Posted March 19, 2016 I got a set of 3.23's here that are 575...? As for ratio it's buggar all difference and just a talking point nothing more. Just put the hat on and forget about it. 1 winton reacted to this
tpak addict 1,909 Posted March 19, 2016 They use 3.27 in FG Series 1 Egas too as they only have a 4 speed auto..... In BA/BF they use 3.23 with the 4 speed.... Go Figure 1 slydog reacted to this
CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 19, 2016 Well i suppose borg warner just made all these different ratios and ford just choise what for what, over the years with different diff swaps and ratio changes,i have found that if your even considering highway use 3.08 or 2.92 is great with a 1.1 final ratio ,and 5 speed and 4 speed auto boxes have a bit more to choose from. CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 19, 2016 I took my car for a drive to brisbane on the hwy today and after the diff rebuild it was smooth and much better than before but reving its ass off 110kph with 3.27.s around 2800rpm but quite punchy when hitting the gas and if i had another gear great, but i built the car for just cruising the streets with a few burnouts from time to time and a little bit of drag racing at street meets so the shorter gears are going to suit that app. 1 MNTL.XD reacted to this
tpak addict 1,909 Posted March 19, 2016 My ZL has the lazy 2.77 LSD... So perfect cruise down the highway car, It holds its own round the burbs but a bit more punch off the line would be nice.. Thinking a 2.92 maybe the choice as it has the best of both worlds I guess.... I want to keep the car resonabley stock as possible due to funds but would like a bit more punch... CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 19, 2016 Mine had 2.77 before if i had to do it all again i would go 3.08. 1 tpak addict reacted to this
MNTL.XD 3,831 Posted March 20, 2016 I'm building a 9" at the moment, rebuilding and changing to 3.5:1 gears. I've been told to just do the crush nut on the pinion with the rattle gun and guess it, it'll be good enough, but i think i'd be best off doing it right first time while i have it apart and forgetting about it. Whaddaya reckon Chestnut? A big difference between being done right and not?
CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 20, 2016 Its critical that its all put together under the correct ft/lbs to get the full life out of it,sure you can whack it all together like i did and it works but needed fine adjustments which i couldnt do,loose bearings will get toasted quick if not under correct load, the guys at the diff shop had a belt sander to take half a thousand off a shim thats how close it can get to spot on. 1 MNTL.XD reacted to this
tpak addict 1,909 Posted March 20, 2016 May have to keep an eye out for a 2.92 LSD.....
CHESTNUTXE 7,375 Posted March 20, 2016 A nice 2.92 xe/xf/ea diff is hard to find these days, plus it will have a few k's on it,for around $600 you can get the diff rebuilt with all new bearings, your lsd re-tourqued,and ready to do the next tour of duty, only problem is most of em are 25 spline axles, except for the v8 xe ones and maybe some others like zk v8 auto. tpak addict 1,909 Posted March 20, 2016 My diff only has 200,000 on it, has not been abused, still tight (still gives that LSD tyre squeel around tight turns) so hesitant to change it just yet...
