Gilmer set up with power steering and air con

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I would love to put a Gilmer Belt drive on my 351, but I want to run power steering and air con as well, I know you can get GIlmer drives with one belt slot for the power steering, can you get them with two belt slots?

Or is there another way of doing it?

Cheers

Could change all the pulleys and run a serpentine belt...

Might be pricey, You would have to run/mount an idler/tensioner too.

I dont run a tensioner in my Serpentine setup on the windsor

although that only uses alt-waterpump-crank pulleys

Nice, take any pics.??

I'm just thinking with all the pulleys, the belt would be pushing 2 metres in length, and would more than likely stretch.

You take up the slack with the alternator bracket.?

i dont think you could do it without it being a serpentine system.... theres no way you can fit two gilmers on the front of an engine without running the chance of shearing shafts etc

Pretty much given up the idea of the Gilmer belt drive.

Im still searching for a replacement power steering pump and bracket, but it was suggested to me today to maybe look at an electrical power steering pump for the 351,Has anyone tried this?

What is the point in running a gilmer like that , then running v belts ?

i was just showing as a example as what can be done as an idea , would solve the AC and Power steer issue witch is what the OP is asking , that is the point

What if you fabricate brackets to run a twin pulpy a\c compressor, then run a belt from the A/C to the power steering pump. Sounds primitive, but something to think about.

Or run an electric power steering pump.

Ok bit of an update.

Astra P/S pump purchased and positioned, this gets rid of a belt driven accessory, as a result I have fitted a Gilmer belt, with one belt slot, this will be for the Air Con Compressor, which allows it to sit very close to where it does on a I6, therefore hoping that I can use the existing air con hoses with little modification.

Astra pump is the way to go.

I would consider an EL alternator for the set up.

They are 100Amp. I have one on my XD 351 with a gilmer drive

I run an MSD dizzy, Holley red fuel pump & twin EL thermos.

Charges at 14.3 volts at idle.
