Installing a ghia interior light over standard?

Just picked up a nice chrome light, is all the wiring same and mounting points in a standard gl?

Yeah.  Juts be careful when screwing in the positive that you dont touch the bodywork.

They nearly all get that hole... Beautiful thing about the gl light is its the same from XR to XF, easy and cheap to get new ones.

 

That said, probably isn't that hard to get covers for the Ghia style ones either.

Yeah they're tricky.  Rare spares have to be told you want to big one, the commodore ones are too small.

From memory you will need to jump a wire from the pos to the other side pos to operate the reading lamps.  The GL wires are only a wire for the pos and neg earthed to the roof braceing by the mounting screws, the lanes had dual pos wires... dunno why they didnt just do it internally LOL.  The pos wire will go into a plastic bush in the backing plate insualted from the body.

Just thought that one thru again... the reading lamps would have been fed from the ACC circuit where as the courtesy light would have been wired direct to pos on one side and the neg side (blade?) is looped thru the door switches.

Reading lamps operate regardless of the ignition switch I think.

iv put the ghia/fairlane LTD light in my XF, fuckin heaps better than the standed one

Your almost spot on there clint. The ghia light had constant power for the map lights. So straight to battery. The center light was in circuit with the door switches or could be over ridden by the dash switch.

 

To fit to GL if memory serves, you gotta drill a new hole in the roof bracket as the gl lights holes are furthur apart. Then you gotta bridge the map lights into the same positive as the center light. Works fine but you gotta have interiour light on to get map lights on.

Yeah that was it mate.. i thought the earthed would be switched thru the doors but not so... if ford did it that way they would only need 1 pos to run either, reading lamp pos switched on light and door adjar earth switched at door. And then they couldbhavevpowered both with an internal bridge instead of running 2 pos wires.... But that would be too simple then hey.

2 things if i can, firstly the standard light in xd-xf is not the same as xr-xc, the bases are completely different they just look the same

 

and secondly the ghia lens is still genuine ford for about 40 bucks from memory
