It's hard to solder those lil connectors on and make them stay, usually they will rebreak everytime you tighten the dial back down anyway.
    Wreckers...... 20-30 bucks. Done.
If it still does it, there is a short in the wiring.
And.... have you considered you might be using the wrong temp sender or the fault is intermittant in that?
Also make sure you don't use thread tape on the sender , they use the motor as earth.
I'm pretty much out of ideas after that mate.

    You sir, win the internet.

Despite the fact I'm absolutely woeful at soldering, the fact that it looks dodgy as hell, and the fact I did in fact put it on upside down, it works.

It was loose on the board (moving around in its solder) and there was a big black patch around it. It wasn't giving me a reading on the multimeter.

Do Jaycar sell stuff like this? That was going to be my next stop.

On my old temp gauge there's another resistor (banded though, looks normal) sort of like it, if the bands match the letters would I be good to swap them out, or should I replace it with the exact same thing I took off (can't be that good if it blew...)

Alternatively I have to go hunting a new one.

I've got one of the Repco ones Steve is talking about, fit's pretty easily over my XD (medium I think, it lists the cars it'll cover easily on the back). It's pretty thick too, and has a strap that goes under the middle. No complaints so far.

I was wondering that, too. Radio holds the original in with skinny nuts behind the knobs........

Hmmm.....skinny nuts behind the knob. that sounds a bit suss. Sorry dudes.

I'm not so much worried about it looking original, more that I can put anything I do to it back to original condition later on if I need to.

I'd say buying a new fascia and drilling into that if I need to would be the way to go, can just put the old one away somewhere in case I ever want to change it back.
I'll get the fascia before I buy a unit to make sure it'll fit reasonably well.
