Panko 2,480 Posted November 6, 2018 Fix one thing, break another, thats the way it goes, right? well fuck. What did I fix? well not me, but between Yesterford and Trackside they fixed it The steering wobble is bloody well gone! at long last it has gone! I first took the car to Yesterford, and got Tim to come with me for a drive, got it back to the workshop and chucked it up on the hoist. Had a good look over the car, front and back, nothing stood out. We decided to swap the LH road wheels back to front though, and try again. no good. Because I was close, i went and saw Craig at Trackside again, and he static re-balanced the front two wheels. When he put them back on the car (as much as I hate them) he did the nuts up with a rattle gun, because he realised I have the wrong wheel nuts for the wheels. They will work, but they arent great at centring the wheels, so by doing them up wiht a rattle gun it does it fast to make sure they dont move. ANYWAY, doing what he did fixed the wobble. its completely gone. at 100km/h its smooth, wound it up to 120km/h and its still smooth. Im wrapped but annoyed it was such an easy fix in the end. it also means being a simple fix, it can also be a very easy and sensitive to coming back. so ill play it by ear and see what happens as i drive it more. now for the oh fuck moment Decided to drive the car to work, heard a bang and didnt think much of it...stopped at work and found this vvv driver's side, original Lucas headlight, gone to heaven so so annoying and upsetting. My mate Michael has a few spares i think he will sell or give me cheap as chips. It needs special wheel nuts. i think ive found the style it needs. doing some research now
SPArKy_Dave 8,873 Posted November 7, 2018 Alloy wheels from the 70's/80's, almost always need shank lug nuts. You didn't get shank lug nuts?

Craig sold me the wheel nuts when he fitted the tyres for me, but he didnt pick up on the holes in the wheels because he wasnt fitting them to the car, until today. Panko 2,480 Posted November 7, 2018 they need to have a taper to them though, as well as the shank.
Panko 2,480 Posted November 7, 2018 this is exactly what i need as far as i know https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Otis-Inc-LA-Closed-Lug-Nut-7-16UNF-Cone-Seat-6mm-shank/372481149011?hash=item56b99b4853:g:cz0AAOxyrP9RZl5O:rk:11:pf:0 1 deankxf reacted to this
SPArKy_Dave 8,873 Posted November 7, 2018 Ones with tapered inserts, have a (usually 60degree) taper, before the shank. (basically the same as Ghia wheel nuts) Wheels without inserts, need shank lug nuts with the flat edge, and washers. Interestingly, EB GT wheels require 60degree tapered shank lug nuts from factory. But EL GT wheels use non-shank tapered nuts.
SPArKy_Dave 8,873 Posted November 7, 2018 Nice Products, have a big range of aftermarket wheel nuts off the shelf. Suss out their online catalogue. Are those RS alloys, hub-centric?
deankxf 20,288 Posted November 8, 2018 You have Me wondering if my bathurst globes need cenering rings now or if it's just tyres/wheel balance. They are correct shanked nuts so I thought it would be fine. How's the new diff? Is it fine? Picsof inside the old one not loading ; )

Picsof inside the old one not loading ; ) i tried the rings i was running with the 15s, and they wouldnt fit, wheels are different centre bore. Ill just need the correct wheel nuts i think. the new diff is awesome. Took the car for a (hard) drive tonight for about 4 hours, to clear the head...it copped a fair hiding the poor thing, but handled my abuse fine. its driving pretty good now with the front end sorted, and the new diff, but i now want to get the rear wheels rebalanced. there is just a vague vibration down the back now, and I know at least one of the rear wheels (which came from the front) is missing a wheel weight. Pics of old diff dont exist lol I havent touched it, havent had time, or motivation. 1 deankxf reacted to this

deankxf 20,288 Posted November 8, 2018 yeah it happens.. was broken anyway. at least driving a 1.3 escort in anger isnt' like a barra turbo where you'd probably end up in a tree.
Panko 2,480 Posted November 8, 2018 yeah its pretty safe to drive hard, providing i dont put a rod through the block or something lol

Fingers 463 Posted November 8, 2018 I suggest you look for an English style diff as they are much stronger, especially if there is a possibility of a 1600 or 2000 going in there. They are usually easier to find than the tin hat style as they are usually broken. Also, what tyre size did you end up going with on those great looking RS wheels?
Panko 2,480 Posted November 8, 2018 they will hold up if i dont drive like a dick head. ideally yes id fit an english diff, but its all money i shouldnt be spending. it will never have a 2L fitted, but 1600 is a good chance. not big hp, just a mild cam and a single 32/36 weber. done. 1 Fingers reacted to this
Panko 2,480 Posted November 8, 2018 oh and the RS wheels are genuine units, 13x6" with 185/60R13 tyres. 1 Fingers reacted to this

deankxf 20,288 Posted November 9, 2018 @SPArKy_Dave probably should move all these tutorials to a dedicated thread for how to understand things working. no one will be looking for them in an escort thread in years to come? 2 Fingers and 2redrovers reacted to this

Panko 2,480 Posted November 12, 2018 went and picked up from Michael a pair of aftermarket headlights for the escort yesterday, as well as a pair of other "goodies" mmm Recaros one of them is f*&^#!, and the other is near mint, just needs a clean. AND, they are NOT left/right specific, so the good (passenger) one im going to fit up to the driver's side for now, and get it recovered later down the track to match the interior. never mind the cat or dog hair, i cleaned that off after i took this pic haha they came with these home made rail adapters to suit (i think) a Proton or Honda Civic or something. anyway, doing some measuring it turns out i very easily modify them to fit the escort... Ill need to cut the 4 tabs off (one of them is circled) and drill holes approximately where the arrows are pointing, and it will bolt straight into the escort...winning! i did some test fitting today with the f!*@&#^ one...yeah its a tight fit in my little car. they're a tad bigger than the original seats. it has to come up about 15mm once its bolted to the rail adapter, which will allow me to move it a tad left, which will give it a tad more room width wise.
