Adding hidden FM

My xb coupe has a factory am radio cassette. Cassette doesn't work but am does. So I need some other source of music, either FM, iPod or usb etc. the catch is, I don't want to change the radio as it looks great. Is there a specific maple way to have a hidden source that is very simple? Others must have done this.

Is the glove box all part of the dash in this model? I had a friend that in his HR, the inner glove box was a plastic insert that could be removed. So then he made a a board to hold a cd player and installed it in there, so you opened the glove box to access the cd player

you also might be able to fit a mechless one (no moving parts for cd/tape etc) in the console or another part of the dash(or in console tray section if it was an XF.. just saw XB so dont cut it up.)

I have a mechless one in my Fairlane, I was going to hide it in the glovebox but just mounted mine in the normal spot. They are very compact and you can just chuck your music on a USB (Period correct music hehe), no need to have CD's lying around the car either....

Just use an FM adapter.  They attach in line on your aerial wire and just connect to accessory power, very simple.

 

Then you tune to a specific frequency on the AM radio and you will pick up the FM band which is adjusted on the FM adapter.

 

Quite small and can hide in the glove box very easily.

You may also be able to mount it in the centre console especially if its a mechless one. So you dont have to run a heap of wires to it use an amplifier then just 3 small wires go the unit (power,ground and amp trigger wire). All the speaker wires then come from the amp

I doubt audio quality would be great, and I'm not sure the FM band would be correct for Australia, as these are a chinese product.

 

But on the plus side, they would be small enough to conceal if you wanted to retain a factory look. I'm actually putting one of these (Non FM model) into one of my cars, just need to get around to wiring it up.

Here is another idea if you can get working cassette.

 

You can stream almost any Australian radio station through your phone with an app called 'tunein radio', and plug your phone into the 'cassette'. Only thing you would have to be careful with is your data usage on your phone, but you can circumvent this by just playing your own music collection instead of the radio of course.

 

Never actually used one of these cassette thingos though, so cannot tell you how well they actually work.

They are not cheap but they are simply awesome and keep it looking period

Found Redirad on eBay. Small hidden unit that sits in between aerial connection and has iPod connection. So no cutting at all and get full music. Cool. If they are no good, don't tell me. I've already bought it for $150!

I'm actually re-locating my head unit to the centre console box this weekend because all the lights are giving me the shits and it looks really out of place. So glad I didn't do any butchery to fit it.

Yeh it's really important to have an original looking radio. The redirad installs in 5 minutes and nothing is changed

i unpluged the original am radio in my cortina and ran wires off the plug to a cd player in the glove box. pretty easy really, drill a hole big enough for the wires in the corner of the glove box and run them threw to the back of the cd player. Mine has a remote that i use that to change stations ect and close the glovebox when its parked or playing.
