hellenikboy 32 Posted October 12, 2014 Hey guys, Got stuck in a carpark today. I parked and tried turn the car back on and the starter motor would not turn over. I gave it a bit of bang and tried wiring the starter directly from the battery and still nothing. Just wondering is there anything else i can try before I can confirm my starter is dead? And when buying a new starter should i just go for an AU starter. I've heard they are more powerful and smaller in size. Thanks
gerg 10,871 Posted October 12, 2014 Is it an upright type with the solenoid on top next to the exh manifold? If so, the heat causes the solenoid cap to split and then no go. If you manually bridged it out and still no go then I'm afraid she's cactus. AUs will fit i believe but maybe need drilling out from metric to imperial? 2 steve mcqueen and bear351c reacted to this
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted October 12, 2014 I think up to BA/BF fit? Not sure about FG. Should bolt straight on from everything I've ever heard.
hellenikboy 32 Posted October 12, 2014 Yea its an upright one. I have extractors and its right next to the solenoid. So I should just go get a ba/bf starter from repco.
SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted October 13, 2014 Just rebuild your existing one, if it's a bosch. Repco will prolly try to sell you a chinese bosch copy starter. I don't know if they're any good or not.
SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted October 13, 2014 Alternatively, I just remembered I've got a genuine BA Falcon Bosch starter here somewhere. Bought it new yrs ago, and never used it. If you're interested, PM me.
BBS XE 160 Posted October 13, 2014 I got a secondhand EL one on mine, cost $20, smaller, more power. A spare engine I bought had a new chinese one on it that I used first, lasted 2 months.
hellenikboy 32 Posted October 13, 2014 Thanka guys. I was just going to go to repco cause i work there and i get trade price. But if you guys reckon they are shit then ill reconsider. The brand we have is oex so not sure if they are made in china or not
SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted October 13, 2014 If you work there, why not just order in a bosch one, or the parts to repair yours? Should be a pretty good price, with staff discount I imagine.
hellenikboy 32 Posted October 14, 2014 I forgot all about ordering it in. I had a sus today and it will be like 100 bucks to order a bosch starter motor and 80 bucks for an oex one both are for a ba 1 SPArKy_Dave reacted to this
