Yep as soon as I get it going again I’ll be sure to calculate fuel consumption for sure.

I ended up running a “dayco” thermostat and a new housing from ebay.

Just thought I’d close this post out, changed out thermostat and thermostat housing. Still uses same amount of fuel and stats really cool on temp gauge. So I’m guessing these are just pigs on fuel and she stays cool 😎. Anyway cheers guys

No worries 👌🏻 Rocker cover gasket needs replacing anyway so when I do that I’ll do thermostat, oil and filter too. Cheers bud

Yeah solid I’ll get into this now and also check the thermostat after iv got another ready to replace it with. Iv been researching all day and the only information I can find on damage from stuck open or missing thermostat is fuel consumption. I think maybe the previous owner had it stuck shut and car was overheating so they just removed it? I’ll only know when I pull it I suppose

Either that or the previous owner has had it stuck shut and just removed it? As the gasket glue looks pretty crappy and home job done. I think I’m just going to replace it...

I think Deaner's onto it... I'll add that my EF used to get in the 9s on a trip, 10.5s around town. Manual though.

My current EL wags (auto) gets around 14.5 to the hundred, but there's something not right with it. Done TPS, oxy, MAP, still tries to stall occasionally at the lights then catches itself again. I'm actually thinking now it might be fuel pressure reg sticking intermittently but haven't bothered going any further with it. My 302 XE gets not much worse than that, doing identical driving.

With yours, no trip computer means you'll have to calculate it the old way.
Take fuel used, divide by km on the odometer and multiply that number by 100 to get litres per 100km.

Dean's pretty much nailed it, I did mine 6 years ago and hasn't missed a beat. The original odometer gear seems to be made from a different material to the others (like neoprene), just crumbles over time. The new one you get feels a lot tougher, more like the other nylon gears.

    welcome aboard,
probably should buy a gregorys book for XF (don't think there's an XG one, so if you need the electronic stuff you'll need an EA EB book also)

to remove the speedo cluster, its a bit of fun in the XG..

remove the light switches on the surround is what i did(but have seen them left mounted and unplugged later) take note of where they were and what wires they were plugged into.
    one screw holds them on.

2 screws on top for the surround, 2 under the light switch areas, and 2 hidden under the dash that most people don't put back in.. need to remove the fuse panel for this(pull the hand brake lever out a few clicks to manouver it out

the cluster mounts with 4 screws, 2 on top, 2 on the bottom.
can't remember, but you might need to remove the steering wheel on XG to get the cluster out.  there's no speedo cable, but there are 2 wiring plugs on the back.

if you were keen.. and had a spare to play with..
the odo gear is $5 ish on ebay..
on the XG you need to remove the speedo, and remove the needle and the face plate to get access to the gear.. that's after undoing lots of screws on the cluster housing etc..

i haven't got time to google pics for you but there'll probably be a tutorial on fordmods if it still exists and may be on here also if the photos still work
