hmmmmm criss from the tranny shop who worked at the geelong plant back in the day said those boxes were just filled with normal engine oil from factory, but i run penrite gear oil in my box ,were your syncros replaced ? when criss rebuilt my box, with a new single rail kit and new syncros i honestly cant belive how good it is ,its the best rail box i have ever shifted and not sloppy at all,new alloy shifter nut as well, maybe just try a lighter oil and see what happends,a lot less work than pulling it out.

    what oil is in it..
one of the service manuals suggested ATF but after mine was reco'd the builder said to use engine oil, 30weight from memory
gear oil is way too heavy

    It's got 80/90 gear oil.

When you say 30 weight, what specifically is that?

Evening all, I’ve had a single rail in my XD for some time and while it is eventually being replaced sometime in the future I am getting more frustrated with it every time I drive it, and as a result not wanting to drive it.

Most issues I have read are people having to fish for a gear with it being sloppy.

I have the opposite issue, mine is difficult to get into any gear and even worse on down changes, it’s like lots of resistance. It’s beyond agricultural.

The box was rebuilt back in 2014 and has only travelled about 700km since.

The clutch has been bled a number of times but it’s the same shift quality.

I’m thinking it could be the type of gear oil I’m using???

    Any advice is much appreciated.

    Cheers

Just reading about how the camshaft are stamped TE.

Basically the camshaft of 1992 had total lift of 0.260 x 1.6 for the rocker = 0.416 life.

    1993 onwards you got 0.278 and 0.283 x 1.6 = 0.444 and 0.452.

A good upgrade is the E303 or crane equivalent of 220@.50 and 0.498 lift.
A factory GT40 style head will be on its limit with that cam, remember that a GT40 cast head is on its limits for a 302w.

I have looked into these and I can’t see how a complete set with valves etc can be landed here for $1300 bucks, as a bare set is $500us, plus conversion and freight (would be a bit as they would be heavy).

Most forums I have read say they are ok for a cast head but need work to flow as good as an AFR165.

The main issue the header bolts are spaced wider so you couldn’t use an off the shelf header flange.

Get some alloys for a little bit extra, even if they are the Proflow or TLG brand, they will work great as it’s not a 6500rpm all day motor.

This is coming along well. I personally wouldnt be deciding a cam until you have the heads sorted. The windsor heads are the biggest restriction, and the disappointing part is any cast iron windsor head is a restriction on a 302w so it’s worse on a 351, at least get an AU GT40p head or a set of cheaper alloys. Aim for torque rather than higher end HP/Revs.
I’d probably use the E303 grind which I think is about 220@50 and .498 lift, crane cams and comp all make a similar grind.

A decent set of headers to suit a windsor into X series is going to cost $700 plus anyway.

The plug angle on the P heads is a pain but with the right spark plug angle boots you can get away with it.

Actually you would need to get the head bolt holes enlarged on a AU GT40p head to suit the 1/2 351 head bolts.

If your keeping the crossflow and stock EFI, then keep the engine stock. No point fucking around chucking money at it to go faster while it's got the factory EFI.

Carbys work, but it is 2018. You can put an aftermarket EFI solution on fully installed for under $1k if you do it yourself. Then tune it as cranky/mental as you want with all the benefits that come with efi and after market computer (full tuneability)

If you were smart you would fit a Barra and be done with it. There are a few of us that have a disease and love spending money on crossflows to go slow. Myself included. But I know deep down I could have spent half on a Barra conversion and gone twice as fast.

Yeah just slap a set of cheap alloys on it, you will likely have to upgrade the valve springs due to the roller cam so check that out.
