Panko 2,481 Posted December 1, 2016 Ok guys, this is the second premium sound I've been through in my XF. they have both died. they cut out, then try to turn on again, but just can't, so whilst driving there is a frequent click from the radio and factory amp, and a pop through the speakers as the radio clicks on for a split second. Its almost like a capacitor is dead inside or something like that. does anyone know of a place that can repair these units? 1 dex reacted to this

dex 2,065 Posted December 1, 2016 Mine had the cigar lighters removed ,, and the fuse ,,they work on the same 30 amp fuse ,, " maybe for a reason " ,,, Being a hire , limo service , was thinking cigar lighters removed to get rid of temptation . Muggins here bunged the fuse in ,, and bingo ,,, radio , amp n all working ,, Tuned in all the local stations ,,,. Then found all the cigar lighters in the glove box ,, Cleaned them , and put them instu ,, All was good in the universe ,, Went to bed happy ,, Next morning ,, key in ,,, bop bop , bop ,, flicker flicker ,, Key off ,, fuse panel off ,, fuse out ,, After all the other drama this weekend ,, i havnt touched it . But keen to look ,,, was sortta hoping a gummed up connection ,, or dud aerial conection ,," that did the same in my xd years ago ,, and that was it ",, But it didnt have the lighters ,,, im sus on them too ,,! Panko 2,481 Posted December 1, 2016 Ok, well this is the second unit i have been through. The first one did the same, they slowly get worse until they dont want to turn on at all. If i stick a cassette in, the amp and speakers all work fine. Its literally just the radio section thats dead. Ive replaced the cigarette socket when i made my gauge panel for the console. So both units have died with different cigarette sockets. 1 dex reacted to this
dex 2,065 Posted December 1, 2016 Hmmmm Looks like i might try unplugging the cigar lighters ,,, " i gave up smoking 3 1/2 months ago " ,,yaaaa ,, And see how i go I dont have any tapes to try ,,, so have not whacked one in .
SPArKy_Dave 8,881 Posted December 1, 2016 My suggestion, would likely be failing capacitors, causing transistors to struggle to turn on. In anything that old, and electronic, the caps will be weak. If you get an ESR tester, you can test them all in situ, to confirm if they're outside specs or not.
dex 2,065 Posted December 16, 2016 Bit of an update ,,, Pulled the door grab handles off to see if i could tidy them up from what i suspect rings on fingers , scratching the knacker out of them . Whilst i was there , i pulled the connections on the cigar lighters and taped them up . .... Dont smoke no more .. Decided to bung the fuse back in ,,"30amp" and turned the car on ,, Radio works perfect ,, tape deck that was untried ,, works perfect ,, Now ,, only thing ,,, Does the premium system come on automaticly when you fire up the car ,,,? Mine does ,,, and you have to turn it off manually 1 Panko reacted to this
Panko 2,481 Posted December 16, 2016 Interesting. Yes mine does turn on with the ignition (when it works). that is normal i believe. you know you can program the unit to turn on, and tune to a preset, at a any time of the day (providing the ignition is on). i can't try mine, or investigate, because my car is now sitting in a panel shop, very very out of shape i got run into last weekend. so it will be a while before i see my car again
dex 2,065 Posted December 16, 2016 Feel for you there mate . Least one upside is that you were rodgered and survived . Could be worse ,,, trouble is , crap like that dont happen to that dickhead in the area ,, you know ,, the one with redrilled rims , 5 different coloured panels ,,bald recaps , two bolts holding a sports wheel where an airbag wheel should be ,, No ,, And if i did ,, hed be the first arse to get the massive payout ,, and act like a twat all over again ,,,, This time in a newer statesman . This sort of thing happening to an enthusiast that truly loves the car for what it is , represents ,, and can be ,, Is wrong . It truly was a neat wagon . Or should i say ,, will be even better . Right . I dont understand the bit where you say pre program ,, does that mean i can stop the auto start up on fire up ,,?
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted December 16, 2016 I dont understand the bit where you say pre program ,, does that mean i can stop the auto start up on fire up ,,? Say you wanted to hear the 6pm news on 101.7FM every day, even if you normally listen to 100.9FM. You can set the unit up to automatically tune itself from 100.9 to 101.7 at 6pm every day as long as the car is on at 6pm.
