dogart 0 Posted April 11, 2015 My wipers decided to fail whilst driving home in a downpour, lucky I was only 3km away!Ends up being the 2.5 inch control arm that comes off the wiper motor and links up the control arms. The bolt/ball ends are F'ed rusted and rounded so it didn't hold the plastic last connector for the wiper control arm. So it just fell off and the second control arm followed. Now I've rung 6 wreckers here in Perth, sorry me not got. Can't get the little control arm by itself or a complete windscreen wiper assembly!Any McGyver fixes for this, anyone in Perth know of a XH being wrecked (have looked on gumtree, nup!)Can't drive in the rain without bloody wipers!Have found exactly what I want for a bargain price on ebay but won't ship to Perth for me.http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Ford-Xf-Nl-Xg-Xh-Wiper-Motor-Unit-Complete-/251911825421?cheers
XTREME KARTS XF 1,212 Posted April 11, 2015 Why not have a go at rebuilding your original assembly? I bought these of Ebay for my XD, might end up buying another pair for my XH http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/111620104254?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT 1 SPArKy_Dave reacted to this
dogart 0 Posted April 11, 2015 My control arms and those white grommets are fine on mine. It's the small control arm that is on the back of the motor which is stuffed rounded off! Where one wiper control arm slips onto and the other wiper control arm clicks onto the end (The grommet in the photo with the half round end!)
XTREME KARTS XF 1,212 Posted April 11, 2015 Dont think i've heard that happening before? Got a pic?

Nath 1,975 Posted April 11, 2015 Buy yourself a pair of goggles and stick your head out the window
dogart 0 Posted April 11, 2015 Got the arc welder out and tried to put some more meat on the end ball.Worked for about 10 oscillations . . . then it fell off! Just not holding. Any tighter and it would scrape out the inner plastic surface very quickly.Time for a beer!
dougie77 789 Posted April 11, 2015 Wouldn't it be the same for all x series not just xh Cortina for life

SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted April 11, 2015 FFS, LOL! that's what happens to all of them. The nylon cup in the socket of the end wiper linkage wears, so the arm just falls off eventually. A pair of the new/reproduction wiper linkages will solve the issue. They are a tight click on fit, and have a small void inside them, which holds grease for lubrication. Don't go ruining the ball end (which is Nickel plated) by welding it, unless there are sections of the ball obviously missing, from bad rust. And yes, with the exception of the plug being different on the XD wiper mechs, they are all the same, right up to XH. 2 dougie77 and XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
steve mcqueen 1,796 Posted April 11, 2015 Similar items on ebay say 79 to 99 all the same. I have one of those arms that is crap on yours you can have for nicks to if you want. Let me no.
XFH00N 37 Posted April 11, 2015 Well I have got access to a NA fairlane and a XG so if either one of them will fit I can go get them
dogart 0 Posted April 11, 2015 unless there are sections of the ball obviously missing, from bad rust. That was exactly the case, it was so bad from rust and sections missing that's why I started to rebuild with the welder.

SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted April 12, 2015 Should be able to get another one of those in reasonable nick. Failing that, try de-rusting it in a phosphoric Acid based solution. You should be able to repair that with lead loading, and reshaping I reckon.
dogart 0 Posted April 12, 2015 Too hard mate I'm busy working!Called 6 wreckers here in Perth nobody has that part and I was told that why would a wrecker take that piece off to selland render a complete unit useless!
SPArKy_Dave 8,921 Posted April 12, 2015 Too hard mate I'm busy working! You won't have a choice, if you want working windscreen wipers. Look at it this way...... It'll be good for another 200 odd thousand k, after you've fixed it. Most second hand unit's will be the same on that ball, and/or have worn nylon sockets on the linkage arms. Nath 1,975 Posted April 12, 2015 Could try soaking it in vinegar overnight. The rust will just wipe off.
