waynegrovs 1 Posted September 20, 2014 I was talking with and engine builder who told me that internally the ford 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder are the same and that the box can handle over 500hp is this true
Stumps 311 Posted September 20, 2014 hmmm I wouldnt' put a 500hp engine with a T5 myself as I have destroyed a couple of those with an OHC sixes making around 300hp, maybe if you want to cut corners you could get away with a T5 for a little while, personally I'd pony up for a tremec or a T56. For mildish applications the T5 should be fine, as for the difference between the 6 and 8 version couldn't really tell you but the last two that I broke were from ED XR8's and the 4 litre trashed them after a few months of what could be considered abuse. gerg 10,871 Posted September 20, 2014 The 6 cyl ones had shorter 1-2-3 ratios (1st was 3.47) and V8 ones had 3.25 1st. The taller the ratio, the higher the torque rating. The T5Z had 2.95 1st and was the highest-rated factory T5 made. Your engine builder should be talking in torque figures not horsepower, as it's torque that kills a gearbox. Sure it could handle 500 hp on a rotary spinning to 9 grand with fuck all torque. See what I'm getting at? 2 Outback Jack and NZXD reacted to this
