Different Power Steering Boxes?
Adrian853 replied to Adrian853's topic in Steering, Suspension and Brakes
Fittings all sorted. Power steering up and running! Apparently it’s not as light as the mechanic would expect but will see how it goes on the road test tomorrow morning (UK time) after the Bledisloe Cup match. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Different Power Steering Boxes?
Adrian853 replied to Adrian853's topic in Steering, Suspension and Brakes
Yep, bolts straight in once the Cleveland has been detached from its mounts and lifted up to get clearance! Steering column slid up quite easily. Power steer Pitman arm came with the box and no issues with it mating to the XA’s steering gear. Just trying to source the right fittings for high pressure hose at pump and the steering box. I have XA with manual steering and trying to swap to XF power steering box which I thought was pretty straightforward; just shorten the steering column. Haven’t seen it myself but apparently would have to modify the chassis for the power steering box to fit. The power steering box I have is supposed to be out of a 1985 XF Fairmont. Are there different types of power steering box? XA manual box top XF power steering box bottom Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Good to know, especially as the reconditioned box arrived here in UK yesterday and I’ll be collecting it from DHL Depot later. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Cheers all, wondered if the 4 small lines were something to do with emissions / fuel vapour. Will block those off. I’ve cleaned up the EFI tank as best I can and put a Walbro 255lph pump in there… Before: After: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hello folks, not sure if this is the correct Forum so please accept apologies if not. I’m looking to convert my XA ute to EFI, specifically Holley Terminator X, and have acquired all the parts including a fuel tank from an XG ute. The XG ute tank has 4 small hoses coming out of it and I’m not sure of their function and wondering if I can just delete or blank these off. My tank: An EFI tank with the lines in question highlighted: Thanks in advance all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

With regards to the Shelby drop and referring below image of the shock tower from the engine bay; if I drill for the upper arms any lower, the holes will be outside of the reinforced area on the shock tower and it doesn’t even look like there is room to get a flat surface for the washer? What is the best way to solve this? I presume add additional reinforcement? If you’ve done the Shelby drop, what did you do and how did it work out? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I was looking at getting the King Springs / Koni set-up but the price was way too much; around twice of what I could get Pedders springs and shocks for here in UK. So I went the Pedders route; Sports Ryder coils 2033, big bore gas front shocks 9158, and gas shocks on the rear 9075. I also comforted myself that the spring rates would be better matched to the shocks' damping coefficient compared to springs/shocks from different manufacturers. In my research for what was out there I came up with the following table based heavily on the information that Pedders provide because they are the most transparent. Hopefully this may be of use to others and I would welcome any additions, corrections or clarifications. Global West and King there is literally no information available from the manufacturer, so the information I have is pretty speculative. For spring drop Global West seem to suggest cold cutting the springs - which I thought was always frowned upon? Interestingly, the Global West springs seem to be a lot stiffer than the Pedders.

I missed out on the XG steering box but instead picked up a steering box from a 1985 XF Fairmont that had done 340,000km for less money. If I understand correctly, it was just the XG that was roller bearing but any used steering box is likely going to need re-conditioning and it seems most shops include the roller bearing swap as part of the reco process. So, I need to get it reco'd and would welcome any recommendations in Auckland, NZ - so far I just know of PG Hydraulics. This is the box I've got, more photos at this link: XF Steering Box

Cheers, was a little sceptical given the Inline 6 didn’t fundamentally change. Have no way of checking part numbers but agree; what I’ve read it all seems interchangeable. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Ah, seller also responded; reckons the pitman difference is to accommodate the 4.0 and sway bar. I like the idea of the quicker ratio that comes with the power steering… not that it’s super direct even then… but it’s the only option, right?* *RRS rack and pinion not an option for me. Great info thanks! What’s the difference in the pitman arm? Would it screw with bump steer or Ackerman? Or is the pitman why power steer has an apparently larger turning circle? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Hello folks, I’m in NZ and shopping for parts for my XA. Have found a XG steering box which is obviously power steering, and perhaps roller bearing top? The seller says the pitman arm is different. I also read that maybe the steering column XA to XG is a different size, the XG being bigger? So, should I grab this box and what would I need to do to fit it into the XA. Would plan to use Astra electric power steering pump. Thanks, Adrian Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I did read a thread where that was mentioned and there was a problem with the wheels tucking too much; thinking about why this might be… I’m sure I’ve also read reliably that later model, defo XE, spindles are 10mm taller. So, if BGDAV had taller spindles and did the full Global West template drop which I believe is 1.5” rather than the usual 1” and combined with lowering springs, then it may have put the UCAs at a very extreme angle - only thing I can think of to explain the situation?? Kings don’t list a lot of detail about their spring specification but one vendor listed Low as being a 30mm drop. Pedders 2033 seem to be a 20mm drop. Given the experience you relayed on BGDAVs XE, I think I’ll go with the Pedders. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
