xhadyboy 492 Posted March 10, 2016 Lads . I have borrowed a mates 1991 6 cyl diesel landcruiser troopy to pull a caravan. He said the front diff needs topping up. Would this diff need the L.S.D. type gear oil ? Cause I drove another mates 2006 troopy up a steep track and didn't lock it into 4wd and the rear diff kept switching the rear wheels from left to right ,so the 2006 is L.S.D rear yeah? wagoon 2,429 Posted March 10, 2016 I had a 1990 60 series gxl that had factory rear lsd only. I dont believe the cruisers had factory front lsd, but wouldnt be the first time I was wrong today.
gerg 10,871 Posted March 11, 2016 They never fit LSDs to the front on a 4wd, as the torque steer on the road would make it undriveable. Air lockers yes, as they are switchable. So just good old 80W-90 is the go. Make sure you jack up each side to tilt the axle left and right (to get the oil right to the ends) before checking the level. xhadyboy 492 Posted March 11, 2016 Thanks Greg. That's a handy tip about jacking it up. Gear oil only comes in 75w-80 or 80 w-90 ? Its done 440 kms so thicker the better.
gerg 10,871 Posted March 11, 2016 Make sure it's an EP oil designed for diffs. 75-80 sounds more like a gearbox oil (non-EP), or if it is EP, it could be synthetic (more expensive). Don't go any thicker than you need to, otherwise cooling effect suffers and fluid friction increases.
