xe1984 64 Posted September 17, 2014 Any tips on how to get rid of all that rubber crap in the rear quarters that's suppose to prevent rust. Want all gone so I can weld in sections.
Gav 616 Posted September 17, 2014 Two methods : mechanical and chemical. If you want to remove small areas, a common or garden variety paint scraper or spatula will do the job. That's the "mechanical". You can use a heat gun to soften it some more if necessary. As the stuff is bituminous/oil based, you can remove the residual with oil/grease remover (prepsol) - but it can get a bit messy. My method of choice is to remove the bulk of the material with a scraper, abrasive blast the remainder, then prepsol the remnants. This provides a paint-worthy surface. If you're not aiming to repaint the surface with anything else except the same stuff, your degree of prep can be scaled back. If you just looking not to set fire to the stuff whilst welding...scraping and cursory clean should be fine. 1 xe1984 reacted to this
Outback Jack 6,352 Posted September 17, 2014 Would dry ice work for this like peeps use for the sound deadener? Just a thought, could be a lil less messy. Jack. 1 xe1984 reacted to this
xe1984 64 Posted September 18, 2014 Yeah the dry ice will be to hard as I have cut out bits so there holes for the ice to fall through and I want it all off the walls too.
xe1984 64 Posted September 18, 2014 Thanks Gav for your reply, I might have to do one of them. I'm trying avoid hanging down in the boot to long as I get the worst back spasms.
