Multimeter's

Recommended Posts

There seems to be a large range of multimeter's to choose from, and some have unique features that others don't...

A couple I have considered are;

This one has the ability to read RPM, but not sure if it reads by connecting a wire to the H.T. lead, or by holding it close to it, or both ? Some read by laser...

Not sure what to get at this stage... Any thoughts ?

the most useful part of them for Me is the continuity BUZZER, the $10 ebay ones don't have, and neither does the cheapest Jaycar one.

this one for $28 is likely similar to my favourite one ( i have 3, i bought a $10 incl post one on ebay when i couldn't find the other 2 )
$10 ebay one

$28 one at Jaycar

The one I have is able to do the basics, but can't do AC...

I'm considering stepping up to something a bit more comprehensive and a suggestion was to get one that is capable of 20 Amps...

Dean, do you use a rev counter for your small engine tinkerings ?

only My ears.

RPM meter would be handy for low idle speed accuracy, by the book on cars

My current multimeter has a rev counter and used it to check my XF when Weber went back on, my ears set it correctly 😁

Yep, same for me, only attempted my own wheel alignments in recent years as the blokes I have gone to for the last 25+ years have closed down...😢

My understanding of "Electrickery" has always been my Achilles heel and never got a good grip on it, especially when you don't use these skills regularly to really make it stick in the old brainy parts...

I removed the old aftermarket alarm that came in my XF van recently because of some random things going on with it, but I also thought this would fix the battery draining issue I was having, but not the case...so I hit up youtube and found a video that I could understand what to try, and low and behold I found something that I never considered being an issue...

I haven't had an interior light in the car for a while (by choice) and as it turns out the passenger side door light switch was not turning off because the door was not hitting the switch enough to turn it off, and I thought no globe meant no current draw, but my testing proved me wrong. When manually pressing the switch no current draw, then let switch go and current was being drawn again...

Here is the video that helped;

i haven't watch the video yet.

but on an XF etc, always check the glove box light (i removed it to fix the issue, the switch is not up to a 10kg junk box on 2 hooks for hinges )

auto elec found it in 30 seconds, due to it's a common issue. (didn't charge Me, Legend)
