    CLEVELAND ENGINE TALK

Here is another HOLY GRAIL part i managed to buy this morning ,its a c4 pan fill big block bellhousing, these are very rare in australia and a s*** one goes for about $500 but since covid and not many people going on parts runs to the usa they are almost imposible to find ,i paid $700 for this one and suits a clapper type starter motor so the seller tells me,so now i can fit a c4 to my next 400 build and not worry about will shifters fit or extractor clearance and weight compard to a c6 also tailshaft length and the c6 zaps a fair bit of power,it bolts to any big block pattern 429/460 or 351m/400 and uses std 164 flywheel and converter .

all the later 351m/400 blocks were cast in CF or Michigan foundry, and most of the early ones were cast at the dearborn foundry,i have done 4 400s now and the most common in australia is the DIF dearborn blocks that came out of early 70s gals, then when our xa fairlane and ltd were released around 72 the usa gal was not as popular anymore,so a surplus of early 400 blocks are common to find but not this one shes a 1980 cleveland foundry block and only one i have seen or come across,i still have the D1AE high nickel block and just getting some idears what to do with it,its too rare to just build a mild hyd engine out of it,i have everything to rebuild it bar a crank and rods cause i used it in this engine, but temeyer does the 444 c.i kit which is on the menu.

i will disagree with you on that one as it was me who took the plugs out, this was a 351m block that had never been rebuilt b4 and i got it a week after taken out of the f truck, look at the casting meat bosses around the plugs its no different to the other ones just a larger hole for some reason just remember this was a final revised 1980 block anyway makes a good talking point.

    WINDSOR SMALLBLOCK TALK

its hard to go past 3.00.1 diff ratio with either man or auto,as for std diffs i once bought what i was told a 28 spline lsd 3.23 ed sedan diff and it turned out just to be a stocker ea ghia diff lsd with 25 spline axles,i found this out after i put it behind a stout 351c and top loader,i never had a problem with it and used to dump the clutch every day in a xe sedan,a 302w should be fine with a std diff just change yur ratio to 2.92 or 3.08 forget 3.23 or 3.45 it just dont like it with a 1.1 final drive ratio.been there done that plenty of times, unless you fit a t5 or 4 speed auto.

Heads are on and looking good, but wait there's more Huston we have a problem,1 of the core plugs is bigger than the normal 6 1 1/2 inch jobs,it measures 1.610 or 40.8mm which is weird this is the 2nd thing I have found different to any other clever so I went and got a 40mm but nope to small so back tomorrow to try a bigger one Sent from my SM-A125F using Tapatalk

there is 2 on e bay but they are a bit short as they go into the waterpump ,but they could work i suppose, anyway im selling this engine the new owner can sought that one out as the late model 351m/400 had all soughts of pipes and crap all over the engine.

Every now and then you find something you have never seen b4 on a clevo here is the normal brass tube size but the 1980 351m block tube size is much bigger,i checked my other 400 1972 block and it has the std size so at least i can use it Sent from my SM-G610Y using Tapatalk

Paint job came out well i spend about 1hr masking up and then after final coat take all tape off and use thinners and rag to wipe off any overspray if any at all,we might even put the cam in later as its easy to guide it in from underneath with no crank in the way Sent from my SM-G610Y using Tapatalk

Hey check this out,i found this by accident,an interview with steve masterton about how by the end of 84 they had there 7500rpm clevo front running the pack, and next year the rules are changing so he is back to square 1,even at amaroo park which was a tiny circuit the xe looks sleek and very fast, listen to dick jonsons clevo when they talk to him live, and check the masterton engine at the begining of the video.
