  1. keep a spare wire that will reach  from the solenoid trigger in case it leaves you stranded one day(due to the neutral switch) can crank it on the positive post of the battery or put a switch on it.

needle and seat seems likely in this case for running rough... turn the petrol lock off into the middle and crank it over for a bit, if it comes good will mean its stuck needle and seat.

you should have fancy gross jet needle and seat for it in that shed? that might fix it.

PS... take the holley with you when you go to Deni... at least you have a backup if the themoquad packs up.

Cheers for the advice Dean!! Yeah dad sold a heap of Holley Grose Jets to Johnny Dyno back in the 90's and sold 2 to family friends of ours who raced V8 Commodore Cup.

Yep definitely going to take the Holley as a spare carby to Deni!!

i thought the neutral switch had adjustment in it, rotates on slotted mounts slightly

Which way to rotate it? Left our right? It has elongated mount holes.

  2. After letting it cool down and moving the column selecter around abit it cranked but i now think that the carby might have a sticky needle and seat as well.

I'll check for spark and see how strong it is, if its weak i'll replace the coil.

  3. Alright it was going yesterday, was out by 1 tooth.

Now it was idling fine in the shed then she started to miss then stalled. Cracked over a few times before it fired up again but still had a miss, now it wont turn over on the key so im thinking that the neutral safety switch is out of adjustment. Tried starting it in park and neutral but nothing.

  4. you can also advance the timing by a whole heap by moving the plug leads on the cap one position around, i did that recently(2 places on a 4cyl magna as it was 180 degrees out.)

you do have the leads correct as per firing order?

Yes, 13726548 anti clockwise for distributor rotation

    Yep, this....

(If vacuum advance hits thermo housing.)  Then make sure No.1 lines up with lead, rotor, induction ring, balancer on 6-8 degrees.

    I'll give it a shot.

Where should the vac advance be connected to? Ported vacuum or full manifold vacuum? Running the 600 Holley for now till i install the thermoquad for deni ute muster.

  5. Tried advancing it further? Pull it out and bring it a few teeth around. If it gets closer to starting you are on the right track.

When i move it clockwise to advance it the vacuum canister hits the thermostat housing and when moved anti clockwise the module cover touchs the manifold.

  6. Fella's im in need of some help here,

As the title saids the 302 i've just put into my XD wont kick into life. I tried setting the distributor position to TDC on cyl n0.1 on the balancer, cough's and sputters when you try to advance it, even took the left bank (driver side) rocker cover off and tried setting it by the rocker arms in there "rocking" position.

The distributor was working in the 302 that was in the wagon, even tried using the coil off the wagons motor. The wagon is an XE so electric ignition.

What could the issue be? Spun balancer? Timing chain skipped a tooth?

  7. Hey fella's

I have 2 carbys that i want to rebuiild

I want to overhaul the Carter Thermoquad that i got off a mate of mine, now i know some people dont like them and they can be a bit of a pain to tune but i want to give it a crack myself. How hard is it to rebuild one?

And the 600 Holley that came with the wagon (parts car) works ok but i would like to put a kit through it at some stage.

Again how hard is it to rebuild a 600 Holley? its got vacuum secondaries.

  8. Polson is in the right track, its was very much Incorrect machining, a hardened distributor gear will solve this problem, Crow Cams make the gear to suit, part no. DG2

I bought this gear not long after i rebuilt the engine in my BnS basher back in July 2011, 3 years later and no problems since :)

  9. Well i took out the front vacuum tree, didnt want to it to break so i'll get one from burson tomorrow morning. The threads looked pretty good, does anyone know what the size and thread pitch is? I'll buy a thread tap or thread chaser to clean em up.

  10. My brother had the same sorta issue with his LTD 5ltr, new coil and problem solved so i suggest replacing the coil.

Its worth putting some hi temp paste on as it'll stop corrosion and help the TFI module last a little longer as electronics dont like heat.

  11. Are you saying 200kw at flywheel or at the wheels? It already has a msd cap, rotor and j3. Im losing spark when its underload from standing start. Fails around 4500rpm.

Dodgy hall senser maybe? Is the TFI module still the original MotorCraft one?
