    Deankdx, for future reference, you can get XH XR6 diff which are leaf spring & 3.45 ratio. Take your time chestnut, you will get there. I changed the ratio in my XD from 3.45 to a 3.9 while the diff was still bolted in the back of my XD. I carried out the required shiming of the pinion, swapped the crown wheel & pinion ( matched set ) & checked the mesh with bearing blue. Everyone said that it can't be done. I might have got lucky, but it dosnt wine, clunk or howl. Just not very driver friendly with a 3.9 behind a healthy 351 & toploader, but I can only blame myself for that.

    They are 2.5 inch powerflow ( South African they tell me. ) Near on a straight through muffler, not sure on case length. I'll measure it & let you know.

    I have fitted a 65 mustang tank under my XD sedan. It's 60 litres & rear filling. I fitted an XD oil temp gauge in place of the fuel gauge so I could get a reading from the mustang sender unit. I have just fitted a full 2.5 inch twin mandrel bent system with plenty of room beside the tank.

  13. Just to add, the steering box that came out was an XY 16:1. He got lines made up & used an X series " tin can " pump.
  14. My oldman had a similar problem with his '62 compact. Instead of butchering his chassis rail, he filled, drilled & tapped his steering box to allign to the chassis. He then got a tool maker to " burn a spline " into the compact pitman arm to match his XD steering box. The oldman is an engineer, so this is pretty straight forward for him. Hope this helps.     It's funny how you get used to some things. I have the exact same cam & I have heard it idle so much that I've forgotten how cranky it sounds. I see you have standard tappet covers. Are there rollor rockers hidden under there??

    Astra pump is the way to go. I would consider an EL alternator for the set up. They are 100Amp. I have one on my XD 351 with a gilmer drive I run an MSD dizzy, Holley red fuel pump & twin EL thermos. Charges at 14.3 volts at idle.

    I have 4 into 1's on my XD with power steering. They were a #### to fit, but have clearance once in. As gerg said, you want around 10mm. If that are that close, the exhaust will clout the steering box under load.

    I have a similar setup. 30 thou over with 2v closed chamber heads, XE274 cam, air gap manifold with 750dp. I had a C4 with 3000 stally & 3.45 rear end. Also had a 2.5 inch exhaust with try y's. It moved along nicely. I am currently making some changes which include match porting, blending the bowls & cleaning up around the guides. 4 into 1 extractors, twin 2.25 exhaust, top loader, 3.9 diff gears & a HP centre for my holly. Will be interested to see what it does.

    What if you fabricate brackets to run a twin pulpy a\c compressor, then run a belt from the A/C to the power steering pump. Sounds primitive, but something to think about. Or run an electric power steering pump.
  21. Howdy all. I've been roped into finishing off an engine conversion for a mate of a mate. Problem is that we have fitted an fmx box he supplied, but he has the standard XD tailshaft. Does anyone know what uni joint can be used to couple the fmx slip yoke to XD shaft. The fmx slip yoke is fairly wide with external clips, while the XD shaft is narrower with internal clips. Cheers guys.

    302c won't start

    Align the pointer to TC or 0 on the balancer. Put the dizzy in so the rotor is pointing to No 1 lead. My guess is that you are 1 tooth out & not getting enough advance.
