XF EDDIE

My phones being a cunt but its making a poping sound and can be best heard through the carby. Its worst when its under load and now it runs like crap all the time at all rpms. Do you think its over for this engine?

Well we have knocking. I was looking at it today and i noticed that a knocking sound was coming from the front of the engine. It didnt sound rod related but it has me wondering about the timing chain. Does it have a tensioner? and could a fucked up timing chain be causing the problems. I checked my timing and it was bouncing wildly from 3 to 8 degrees but i do know that the est controls this. What do you all think? Could the timing chain be the issue or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Ok I haven't pulled the down pipe off yet but just driving it around its doing some funky shit. Sometimes its just fine but most of the time its fucked but it has degrees of fucked. Sometimes it just has a shaky idle and sometimes it will stall at idle. I sorta resurrected my compression tester and got 120 on cylinder 1. Low but it should still run? I swapped in some plugs from my xh which made no difference. I should have more once I pull the down pipe but im not hopeful that that's the problem as the cat element seemed pretty clear and not loose as well as the exhaust flow seeming pretty good but at this point im just throwing shit at the wall and hoping for some stickage. Any other ideas for me to try on the weekend?

I also pulled the egr and it made no difference. Still gona pull the downpipe off as the thing now runs so bad that it stalls when you put the headlights on

I was only gonna unhook it from the manifold itself. I hope it fixes this turd

I might just try it with open manifold and see if that fixes it. Ill report back with what happens.

I tried to hollow out the cat but it was so tough that even a socket extension barely broke it so I gave up however I drove it hard again and like before it ran perfectly for about a minute before going back to the way it was before. What could this be lifter? Head gasket? It's got me puzzled

I just checked the cat with a heat gun and the temps were pretty inconsistent some areas were hotter than others with the lowest being about 200 and the highest being almost 300 the average temp was about 220 but there were hot spots. Also when the engine idle got really rough it was making a horrible rattling noise from underneath. I cant tell if its the cat but it does sound like something from that area

Also I forgot to mention that it seems to not put out much exhaust out the tailpipe (even at 2000) you can barely feel it) compared to my f100 with the same engine although I can't tell if this is because of a blockage or the leaks in the system

Well there's been a development. I haven't pulled the cover yet but I took her for a good drive today wide open going 140 and she ran perfect and when I pulled up it idled good but after giving it a rev it slowly lost cylinder 1 again. I noticed the misfire disappears after about 2000 rpm so I'm starting to suspect something lifter. Also it no longer stalls out when I come to a stop so it must have cleared out the atf. Still not to sure about the cat as the exhaust was clogged up with carbon to begin with as it was used as a farm runner at the end of its life. Any way to check or do I just have to hollow it out to see?

Ive got a new rocker cover gasket so ill pull it off and give it a look. Just wondering would the atf burning off would have clogged up the cat?

Well I just got back from taking it for a spin and its terrible. Putting the headlights on is now enough to stall it. I would rerun the compression test but my tester gave up the ghost. At first it ran great but as it warmed up its now just fucked. A this point im suspecting a fucked up lifter not holding when the oil thins out or a wiped cam. I hope its not the cam for this engines sake otherwise its getting a clevo. Real shame for such a low kms engine to be shitty like this.

@SPArKy_Dave I reran the test and it got funky. I had 150 on all except cylinder 1 which was at 110. However this is where it gets funky. I poured some atf down the cylender and when i tested it it fucked my schrader valve. however after replacing it I cranked the engine to clear the atf and whatdya know its back at 150. I only got one reading before my compression tester finally gave up the ghost but now it has me hoping it was a stuck ring. I'm gonna leave it to sit for 2 hrs before clearing it and taking it for a drive and ill update you then.

Ill rerun the test tomorrow and post the results

Just went out and cranked it over. She sounds smooth with no funny spots. It does the same thing with or without the exhaust attached though I can try hollowing out the cat. Ive been driving it daily for about a week and a half like this and ive no change. If it was a cam/lifter/pushrod issue woild it affect compression?

Can I get the same result by doing a no spark crank?

Update: I installed the new intake gasket and unsurprisingly no change. Id like to believe that its running better now but it still appears to be down a cylinder. Im gonna pull the rocker cover and see if the valves are doing anything but i doubt that this is the problem. It doesn't make any sense to me with it having good compression and spark. Only thing i can think of would be a wiped or blocked exhaust valve. Any ideas?

Hey fellas I need recommendations on a full stock style exhaust for an xf ute. I was gonna patch up the old one but that plan fell apart when my tailpipe collapsed after reversing through long grass. I only need a cat back exhaust as the rest is still ok. Are there any premade systems i can get on the cheap or is this gonna have to be a custom job. Also in regards to "clearing" the cat are there any downsides to doing it. I live in qld and got a rwc so that's not a problem but will it cause any issues that cant be tuned out or can I hollow it out?

Hey just wondering does anyone have the torque spec for the intake manifold

Good news and bad news. The bad news is that the back plastic bit of the solenoid has a huge crack going all the way through. The good news is that all the problems were caused by a burnt washer connecting the feed cable. A bit of emry tape and a new washer later shes spinning over just fine. Now to fix the other million issues with this car

Ill pull it off and clean up the solenoid contacts. the post in the solenoid is loose and shoots sparks out of it every time i start it so ill tighten that up. Id like to keep the original size starter because of that classic sound but if cant get this one working good will an au starter fit?

I did another compression reading and it was back at 150. Must be a shitty gauge or something. I swapped plugs and leads and nothing changed but I might throw a new intake gasket just to see if that works, if not I'll pull the valve cover and start tearing into the valvetrain. By the way got any tips for rebuilding the starter or is it a run it till it dies kinda thing?

I feel like an idiot for not thinking of the intake gasket. That would explain it all! I tried the starting fluid trick but got no difference anything else i could try to check it? I think the compression reading was low because the engine wasn't spinning over properly (The starter almost catches fire every time i turn the key and i had to beat it to life to get the car running). I fucked with it some more and finally got the oil to stop turning black within 5 seconds of startup, seemed to help with the lifter noise. Ive been driving it a bit and getting it up to temp and there's been no difference in how it runs.
