That might be it too I'll have to see. I can swap the rails but if I'm going to use the wrong seat I may as well use the one out of the EA as its in much better condition. My original plan was to swap the vinyl cover from my seat to this one but as its different it would need a full retrim and it wouldn't be worth it
-
Well I have bad news. After spending $314 on a seat I now have the wrong seat. I think it's out of an xg rather than an xf because instead of those long bolts it has the e series bolts, it's also noticeably thinner and has a different spring design and backrest mounting holes. I'm going to try and put the seat from my ea into it and I'll see if I can find an actual xf seat in the meantime.

Just a random question but where does the jack go in an XF ute? When I bought it it was just thrown in the back along with the wire handle, in the spare wheel compartment it had some kind of hold down for something just thrown in there and in the top right there's a bracket which looks like something to do with the jack. I stared at it for a good 2 minutes and couldn't figure it out, anyone got any ideas?
-
Will a head gasket for an el fit it? If so I might just pull the head off
-
I'll try to get the motor in there going but when it comes to the idea of an engine swap I just can't see me actually using it after I'm done. I never really liked the EA and with this one being a bottom of the line cfi model I don't know if it would be worth it when I already have an xf. I'll give the ATF trick a try and see how I go.
-
Well the EA is dead on arrival. I was gonna drop the tank and put a pump in it but I decided to try and start it first. Turns out it's seized! I pulled the plugs and they were all rusty on the tip (they had that 'wet' rust like there had been moisture in there). I've sprayed inox in there but I'm not hopeful, I might try pulling the head off to see if I can give it a ghetto rebuild but with it being an ea with 365,000kms it's not a priority. Anything cool I can jam into an ea or would I just be better of listing it on marketplace?
-
Not related to this ute but today I just got given an ea falcon. Tomorrow I gotta drag it off the farm it's at and see if it'll run for the first time in 19 years. Hopefully it'll make a nice "reliable" daily for when the XF is being fucked with. It's a 1990 model so hopefully it won't have too many issues but hey where's the fun in driving when you know you'll get to your destination. Also $1.5k for a seat seems insane! I got the bench in the F100 done for $800 about 3 years ago so I'm hoping that I can get just the drivers side done in this for cheaper than that, otherwise I'm breaking out the sewing kit.
-
Well I've ordered a replacement seat bottom and bolts from midnight spares so that should be here next week, after that I'll have to get them reupholstered. Do they make replacement skins for the XF of do I just have to take it to a shop?
-
Gave rare spares a call and no dice? Anywhere else I might be able to find em. Also still need to find that spring, would that be something I could buy or do I have to hunt down a seat
-
Well she runs good so I decided to try to fix the seat, and that's where my luck ran out. It was sagging on the drivers side which I found out was because the wire/spring that holds up the padding had broken in several places so that needs replacing, and to really twist the knife in all 4 bolts snapped off so now those gotta be fixed too. Anyone know where I can get a replacement for the spring and bolts for the seat or is a new seat my best bet? This one is really fucked up with there being more foam visible than vinyl on the drivers side so it needs reupholstering at a minimum. Ill call my local seat shop and see how much it'll cost to fix this but if you know if know of a goodish seat in central Queensland it would be much appreciated.

Well I'm back with good news. So at idle when I drop the timing the engine runs slower and rougher but after setting it at around 12° it seems to be really happy. When I put my foot down it goes hard off the line and seems to cruise nicely. I might fuck with it more but so far so good. Just gotta deal with that cold starting issue although I think the thermal choke is rooted, I'll swap it out tomorrow and hope for the best.
-
I gave the carby a half assed rebuild while I was trying to get it running so it should be ok. I'm thinking of doing a full rebuild on the original and put it back on but it's missing some shit.
-
Well I finally got off my arse and worked on the thing. I've got it all together and it goes. After driving the thing I now know why I spent all the money on this thing. It hates cold starting and has a rough idle but I'll do some tuning and see if I can get her running better. One thing I noticed is that the odometer seems jumpy with it seeming to wind up too quickly. First time I drove it with the original cluster the trip odometer jammed after a km and the main was winding way to fast. Clearing the trip odometer fixed it though. I'll probably focus on making it run right first but it just seems a little weird
-
So just wondering am I good to just leave the timing where it sounds happy or do I have to bring it back to 10°?
-
Well I've finally gotten off my ass and messed around with the thing. First the lifters are sealed power HT-900, also the XF seems to love timing. I've got the jumper bridged and it runs like shit at 10° but if I just crank the dissy all the way it actually (25° or so) runs good so I'm not to sure on where to leave the timing at but even with the jumper removed I still get no pinging or anything. It still runs a bit shitty but it seems to even out at higher revs and all the valves look to be opening properly. The 3 pushrods still aren't spinning so I'm just assuming that this cams days are numbered but for now as I do need a ute I'm just going to send it and pickup another decent kms engine (150,000) for when this one shits out and gets rebuilt. Also how much does a full bearing kit cost for a crossflow, I'm still debating whether a rebuild in the future would be worth it but if it's not gonna cost more than $1500 I probably will.
-
I don't have a pic of the cam lobes as I really don't want to pull it all apart again but I might be able to get my hands on a micrometer
-
That's one of the good lifters. The "bad" lifter still seems to have the crown on it. Do I just put it together and see if she goes?
-
I noticed that even the "wiped" lifters still had their dome. How much damage should I expect to see if the cam is wiped with 40 mins of run time?
-
I gave them a quick look before installing them and they seem ok. Would it just be the bearings that would cop it? Cus the cam bearings already look hashed
-
Yeah fresh lifters. I'm debating whether I should just run it and see if it works enough to get me to work. What do you think?

Different cylinders than last time. Here's a photo of one of the lifters http://scontent.fbne6-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.15752-9/451505581_2082449598816765_4387373350322083207_n.jpg?stp=dst-jpg_p1080x2048&_nc_cat=109&ccb=1-7&_nc_sid=9f807c&_nc_ohc=RHPrh4CS3JwQ7kNvgHRMJK4&_nc_ht=scontent.fbne6-1.fna&oh=03_Q7cD1QE1UP65L0tFljJkZ1r0VCKa3b-Y8F9

Also I found that photo of the f100 https://cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/917722616108843009/1267362253041307759/20230420_065835.jpg?ex=66a88293&is=66a73113&hm=270d8f206b5a137262dc24f382cd23771482bb89dd9153157c42bd0436f9a17e&

Just wondering is there any saving this cam, it's only got about half an hour of run time on it and the marks on the lifters are very light, would throwing in another 3 lifters possibly save it? Also if there is no saving this cam how long can I just run it as it is. I've decided to keep a six in this rig and I'm planning on having to do a rebuild on this infernal engine in a year or two so how much damage would I do if I just keep running this thing for a year or two and just do 1000 km oil changes?

I got a before pic. Ill just upload it real quick, It's a white 81 custom, looks identical to the first picture. It's a really nice ute with it not having any rust, but after side swiping a car at 80 it's a little worse for wear. I hear ya about first though, I usually started it in second. Couldn't go faster than 10kmh in first but it was neat being able to walk with it.
