    88 XF heater tap

Hi i have a manual 88 XF falcon ute, and the heater is no longer getting hot, i checked the thermostat and it was closed when the car was cold, so i assume its not that. am going to put it in hot water and make sure it opens up ok. so i was reading perhaps its the heater tap, i bought a new one online, but can someone tell me where the heater tap is on an XF, is it in the engine bay or up behind the dash thanks

    88 XF heater tap

yep might have to do that just to get it back on the road, would like to keep it all original and connected if i can get another one, just because its all pretty original and has been that way in the 15 years i have had it and i kind of like it that way

ahhh i thought so, great a simple thermostat change turns into a bigger deal than i thought, where do you even buy the PVS from i cant find them on the net anywhere

    88 XF heater tap

Buy a Tridon thermostat gasket, they're adhesive on one side so you can "glue" the thermostat into the housing before assembly ok thanks mate

all of the sensors i can find on line (most are three port) but they all have that bottom piece attached to the sensor (ie its part of the sensor) so i dont know

    88 XF heater tap

so when i took the vacum sensor off the old housing (old housing has small crack so am replacing it) some of the senor is still in the housing, looks like the bottom of the sensor has broken off? and is still in the housing so seems i need a new two port sensor now? is this correct the part still in the housing should be attached to the end of the thread on the sensor otherwise i dont see how it would come out. if so where do i find a new one

    88 XF heater tap

Also has anyone noticed how difficult it is to fit the thermostat, other cars i have had the thermostat sits in a horizontal housing in a groove so it just sits in place. The issue i found with the XF is that when you sit the thermostat it in the groove in the housing and tip it up vertical to bolt it onto the engine block is slips out of the groove easily, and you cant put the thermostat in the engine blocl side and offer the housing up to it as there is no groove in the block side for the thermostat to sit in. wondering if there is any trick to it, i was going to loop a piece of string around the thermostat and out thru the hose outlet in the thermostat housing to hold the thermostat in the groove when i offer it up to the block and then once bolted in place pull the string out thru the hole in the thermostat hosing where the hose fits on thoughts......

    88 XF heater tap

ok cool thanks for the replies yeah its a Carbi model, good to know its not under the dash. I shall have a look on the weekend. I have had the car for 15 years and always run coolant/corrosion inhibitor in it
  10. ok i took the shield of the starter motor to access the drain plug for the block coolant, and noticed the solenoid on the starter motor (black plastic section where the wires connect to on the right hand side in the photo) moves around and can be pulled away from its steel housing about 5mm (disregard the hose clamp in photo). the two nuts where the wires that connect onto the solonoid are tight and there are no other bolts or nuts securing the black part of the solenoid onto the solenoid housing, and there seems to be a paper gasket between the two in the gap as you can just see in the photo. but then i thought maybe its meant to be like this as its probably been like it for the ten years i have had the ute, is this meant to be loose and if so is it what they are talking about in this text from the original workshop manual regarding the starter motor if its not meant to be like this how do you tighten it up as there are not other bolts/nuts that are holding it on thanks

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

yeah i have returned that starter motor as i didnt ever hook it up or tighten the bolts when i saw the gap,so am going to try and rebuild my old one i took mine apart to clean and lube it and as i was pulling the main internal part with all the wire winding attached to it and this small black plastic part (see photos) came out of inside the body somewhere but it fell out to quick and i didnt see where it came from. i have never taken a start motor apart so i cant tell where it goes and what way around, hoping you can help. photos attached i am guessing it goes somewhere between the green arrows in the last photo, but i may be wrong as i cant see where it would go, and it came out somewhere around where the white lever is, i thought i may broken off the black part attached to the white lever but i check and it didnt, its got me stumped

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

so i bought the new starter motor from ebay bosch BXF456 and they say it fits but i dont like the fact there is the gap between it and the bell housing allowing dust/dirt/grease etc inside the bell housing, surely this is no good?

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

ok thanks for the reply, i shall give it a try. Yeah its a way smaller starter motor, was told it will fit, it bolts on but no good withthe gap to the bell housing for dirt/moisture etc to get into have to overhaul the old one

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

so took the stater motor off turns out the two screws that hold the black cap of the solenoid were missing. the solenoid had a auto electricians sticker on it, but i have had the ute for 10 years so its at least 11 years old since anything was done to the starter motor/solenoid. i am thinking maybe they forgot to put the two screws back in or maybe they have just fallen out. Anyway starter motor started sticking the other day so i took starter motor off and undid the screws at the back of the solenoid that hold the solenoid on, and wiggled the solenoid a bit to get the plunger off the arm but i cant get it back on as there is a fairly stiff spring on the plunger covering up the slot and the arm in the starter motor is a fair way back inside the housing even when i get a piece of wire on it and pull it towards the camera as seen in third photo its still a way back inside the housing. how do i get the plunger onto the arm as it looks like the spring on the plunger needs to be compressed first to expose the slot? I bought a new bosch starter motor to fit it apparently but its much smaller which is fine but because the casting on the starter motor is smaller there is a gap or hole between the casting of the starter motor and the bell housing as can be seen in the last photo, so i would like to overhaul the old one new starter

thanks, yeah i have just put a hose clamp around it for now, thats holding it pretty tight until i can get around to taking it off and looking at it.

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

its possible that someone has before me, but i never have as its never caused an issue, although the bakerlight part seems to have a clean straight edge to it where the gap is between it and the steel part and there seems to be a paper gasket in there so am not sure, might have to take out to have a look at it i guess any tricks to getting it out, have heard one bolt is hard to get to. also with regards to putting it back in i just push it back into the hole and do it up, nothing special?

    88 XF ute issues

Hi i am new here, but looks like there is a lot of knowledge on here, and i saw Mr Polsons ute thread who is also i Hobart so thought this may be the place.so hopefully people can help. have had a manual 88 xf 250 xflow ute for ten years always been reliable. I have couple of questions, 1. its always been missing the vacum delay valve that should be attached to the air filter leg in first photo, is this an issue, maybe i can find one at a wreckers, if so where does the other hose end connect to. 2. It has always had this hose blocked off with a bolt, the hose comes out of the bottom of the three legged white plastic bit,and the hose splits in two , one hose goes off to the front of the engine and the other hose is blocked off with a bolt. where should this hose go and why is it blocked off, is this where the other end of the VDV would connect into from the air cleaner leg 3. now for the most important issue, its started leaking oil when being driven a while ago, i thought it may have been the oil pressure switch, so i replaced that and the leak is still there, thought it may have been rocker cover gasket, but i degreased it and went for a drive and then took the photo and it didnt seem to be flowjng down from the back of the rocker cover, is it the rear main seal gone? if so is this a big job. or is it something else thanks

xf falcon starter motor is this normal?

yeah i found the screws just now and they are both done up tight. the solenoid housing (the steel cylindrical bit) is tight and so are the countersunk screws, as i got a small socket wrench with a screw driver attachment on it, so its all tight and the only part that is loose is the black plastic looking cap that the wires fix too

    88 XF ute issues

ok so turns out it was the red wire with the green stripe and the black plug that had come of the male spade connector on the carby and was just sitting on the end of the spade so i pushed it on properly and away it went. thanks for the suggestions
