I dont believe the clevo and windsor is mounted in the same spot. As we know that if you try to mount a clevo in the XF, the heater pipes get in the way. But I could be wrong. I am probably overthinking this.. so please let me know if I am crazy here.

That is true about the heater hoses in the firewall getting in the way, since I had a clevo in a 85 XF,.....but a work around is ( if your not interested in A.C ), is to plumb the heater hoses into the AC core...........( some hunting in supercheap for S bend heater hoses did the trick )and I guarantee you 100%.......you will get better heat in the cabin, thanks to the bigger AC core....and i just cut the ends of the original heater core and plumbed them up............

  2. As for the UNI............we took that with us, ( though I dont think we used it ), I had a T5 gearbox, and that UNI matched up to the  EB diff..............this happened 20 years ago, and I can barely remember last week.

Thanks Xfish excuse my ignorance but do you change coil springs and brakes etc and di they change OK

We used the callipers that were on the EB diff, since I originally had drums................and we changed the coils .( because they didnt match the fronts on my XF ). If memory serves me right, we were able to use the brake lines from the XF and mount them to the EB diff..........though there was some custom brackets made. Nothing too trivial.

  4. I was able to use a EB2 series diff ( LSD ), into my 84 XF ( sedan )..........no issues. Though I had to be creative with the handbrake cable. The XF handbrake splits under the car, while it splits on the EB Diff. ( i dont know what it dose on a XE ( probably the same ).

  5. hEY GUYS ,

Im wanting a bit more launch power in my el xr8 ( 4 speed auto ), and it has the  factory diff with the ratio 3:45. My question is if I change it to 4:11 ratio...can it mount in the original diff or is something more needed?

  6. Hey guys. I was just going through the 'max ellery repair book 94 - 98', and noticed there are several different sized fuel tanks foe EFs to ELs. ( page 258 )

    standard size - 68 litre

    fairmont, ghia, fairlane, ltd ( v8 ) 80 litre

    Station wagons 72 litre

    and

optional 85 litre tank for sedans.

I have never pulled my tank out, nor have I seen one loose. I would expect that somewhere on the tank it will tell its capacity or am I wrong?

Has anybody ever come across the 85 litre tank for a sedan?

  7. I've been wondering why my battery is a bit flat after sitting 2 days in the garage and  just discovered by boot light in a EL xr8 ( 98 ) is staying on. I've searched for the switch around the hinges and cant locate it......where is it hidden?

Also, while in the boot, will a amp bracket from an NL fit into the EL? My current amp is mounted under the parcel shelf and hope to relocate it to above the rear wheel arch  use the bracket from the NL to hide the amp.....

  8. It's is a solid bracket, and cant be maneuvered. I will just have to grind very gently, and no doubt, it will take several attempts to get it right.Cause as it stands, the alt bracket sits perfectly in the XD alt bracket, and I could only fit 1 copper washer at the back in there to take up the slack. cheers

  9. ok, so the alternator is all bolted and strapped in, i ran an earth to the block from the alt( though I'm confident that i didnt need to, but did anyway ), and the alt charges at 14:68 and 14:58 at the battery in the boot. The volt guage ( xf ghia ) sits 7-9 bar, where before it would sit between 4 -6 , and my speco volt guage is just above 14 volt.  And as suspected, the battery light is on, so i will need to pull the bulb.

The only issue, is the alt pulley dosent line up perfectly with the water pump pulley. It's not dead straight as it use to be. The alt mount is bolted perfectly, and I cant pull the alt back any further than it is. To be dead straight, the alt would have to go back a maximum of 5mm . I've revved the car passed 3500 rpm and i havent slipped the belt. Honestly, i dont think this is a problem but if i start breaking/jumping belts, I will have to re-visit on how to do this.

  10. Hey guys, We are ready to mount my 140amp ( one wire alternator )on to my XF (250 crossflow), and have come into a conundrum. The instructions state that the alternator has to be earth, but have seen instances where it has not been earthed. Can some inform me of why it can work 'not being earthed' and 'being earthed'?

  11. Hey guys, I've attached a set of dual thermo fans to my 250 crossflow ( years ago ), and have always been hindered by the  shaft of the water pump that the original fan was mounted to, because it  makes the removal of the thermo fans a pain in the ass. Is it possible to cut off the thread/shaft ( because it's redundant without viscous fan )on the water pump without causing damage to the water pump?

  12. just before i get around to attaching this alternator, why would i have to earth the alternator to the block? Cause right now, i have the factory set-up on the XF, with the 3 wire set-up and have recently added a 8mm charging wire in place of the original set-up. cause right now, i have a earthing strap between the block to the chaise.

  13. Ok, so this an old post I started and have finally purchased the XD bracket and am ready to mount my aeroflow alternator and of course I'll be going from 3 wire to 1 wire set - up. Obviously all i have to do is just connect the charge wire and tuck the other 2 back into the harness, but will my red battery light on the xf ghia dash stay on, since it's lost the signal......?

And having the XF ghia digital dash, will i show volt charge on that, or will that start flashing at me?

  14. yes, thats what broke. The dizzy was still the factory fitted dizzy ( we believe ), with having replaced only a few components in the last few years. And yes, it has the annoying egr setup, and would like to erase it completely .....oxygen sensors have been added to the list. We'll be pulling the top manifold off when we replace the fuel injectors, fuel regulator, so all gaskets can be replaced. So, now we're just waiting for the new ECU to arrive.

Also, I have a full top/bottom manifold from a ED sprint / throttle ,fuel rail etc ( i pulled it from a wreck 5 years ago, and has been sitting in my shed all that time ), which i would like mounted in place of the explorer manifold. Though i've searched high and low to see if there is any difference between the 2 manifolds, that putting it on the EL XR8 would/could cause issues. Visually, they look the same. Though i know the AU3 used the explorer manifold which was 220kw, as well the ED sprint was rated the same ( being known as the cheap GT ). Of course as stated before, we will replace all gaskets on the manifold before re-installing....just to assume if there is a leak on the manifold side of things.

right now, I'm happy with the  improved power on the factory side of things, though I have had a J3 chip ( stage 2 ) installed in the car for years, and that was pulled from the car when we started having issue's, and will be re-installing it after the gremlins have been squashed.

thoughts on replacing the top manifold?

  15. Hey all,

Well, i took the car to another mechanic, and was told the spring in the distributor was broken, and had the wrong sparkplugs, cause there is a big difference between the 170kw vs the 185kw EL XR8. .......they replaced it, and the car has DISCOVERED full power again, and gear changing has returned to normal. Though it still has a miss ( rough idle ) every so often......so, we're going for an exchange ecu, fuel injectors, and fuel regulator in a few weeks, just to freshen things up a bit.. Yes, I'm throwing money at the car,( though it is over 20 years old ) and still is stock  from factory, but a few pieces here and there. Hoping this will work.....because the mechanic and son have the same car as myself, and know the EL XR8 185kw backwards......will let you know the outcome after it's next visit.
