    Changing diff ratio?

Easiest way to grab them in the chuck is face them back to back and clamp them both in the chuck at the same time, they machine pretty nicely

    Changing diff ratio?

I usually machine the face off the cones and add the amount I took off the cones to the shims

    302 to 351c, help a young fella

A cheap and simple combo tow combo I've often advised people on is one i used to have in the 351 in my customline, it was nothing special but the combo is the key, I used what was essentially a re ring and bearing stock 351 short engine and pair of 302 cc heads with the chamber layed out slightly (i can't remember how much but I ended up with 10.5:1 static comp) a comp 268h and valve springsto suit, torque power dual plane air gap intake, 600cfm edelbrock and a pair of exhaust manifolds (i did later run some yella terra bolt on roller rockers, they didn't make any more power but they made valve float happen about 700rpm later and valve spring retainers lasted longer, ideally I should of put decent retainers and collets in that engine but I had a large bucket of stock retainers I kept in the boot, and I got so good at changing them on the side of the road that I could do a pair in 15 minutes) it made 235hp and around 385 ftlb at the tyres through a c10 with a 2200 stall and 3.5 gears, it made peak torque at 2k rpm and fell flat on its face at 5500rpm, the car was amazing for towing and ran a flat 14 at Heathcote and would shred tyres with 6 people in the car in top gear at 2500 rpm, I like the 268h for budget builds as it doesn't require a high stall, bolt on rockers can be used with it (machining clevo head for screw in studs can get expensive) and it is designed to be a rv cam so it make bulk torque at low rpm, its a cam that doesn't require extra machine work on the heads so that saves a ton of budget

Did you use the correct firing order roller windsors use the 13726548 order like a Cleveland not 15486372 like a pre 86 302 windsor

Au falcon sohc starting issues help needed

Most lpg systems start on petrol and then flick over to LPG when the engine has run for a few seconds, if its playing up when starting chances are its the fuel system playing up, one was to diagnose is to have someone try to start it while spraying some brake clean/carb cleaner down the throttle body, if is starts and runs easily then switches to lpg you know you have a problem with something in you fuel system, if it doesn't then it could be spark related

They are alot bigger (taller and longer) than a xflow or pre xflow with no interchangeable parts with the other 6 cylinders, yes they do use a v8 bellhousing

    Ford 300ci Inline 6

The 300 was a great truck engine, I know one my dads mates pulled a tired 300 out of his f150 and put in a fresh 351 with a tow cam in it, he was that disappointed in it he sold the truck after that

Before you got your ute the prev owner must have given it a hard time when cold, from what I've seen thats the best way to kill rings in a 4.0

    Thom's 4.0l thread

Anything more than .050 will most likely require a re bore
  15. Thom

    Thom's 4.0l thread

As far as the bore goes, I've never seen one that needed to be bored but it would be a good idea to measure it before buying rings/and or pistons ou may find rather than getting oversize rings getting a set of file fits will get you where you need to be, plastigauging the crank with the stock bearings and measuring the bearing shells compared to stock specifications will give you a good idea where you are at but I'd be surprised if it needed machine work giving the cars maintenance history The std volume pump is more than adequate for even most extreme builds, considering its a street engine and won't see constant racing conditions the std bearings will be adequate as well if you can find them ef to au have restrictors in the oil galleries to reduce the the amount of oil in the head and keep the bottom end properly lubricated, they just need the oil galleries drilled out to suit them

The pistons were basically the same for e series au has a smaller dish but a longer rod, im unsure if you can use them in an e series engine you'd have to check if the skirts clear e series counterweights
  17. Thom

    Thom's 4.0l thread

Unless you are thinking of boost, (a decent amount at that) the stock xg bottom end will be fine, most e series bottom ends are the same other than el hybrid have au size mains and the au long rod and ea has slightly beefier rods than other e series

    Help!

I'd hedge my bets on the starter, if the drive is binding up on the flywheel it could cause the engine to lock up and winding it back and forward with the breaker bar is making it release

    Xg falcon loosing power

could be, but they usually stop the engine running when they go bad

    Xg falcon loosing power

Xg and xh had distributors, the utes missed out on coil packs until au

    Xg falcon loosing power

For Efi Falcons on LPG, its standard fare for the fuel pump to be running the whole time, that's why they always used to say you have to keep a minimum of 1/4 tanks of petrol so the pump doesn't burn out, when switching between gas and petrol all the switch does is turn the injectors on and off and turn the lpg lockoff on the opposite position, they are wired this way so that LPG and petrol can be switched instantly without having to wait for the fuel rail to be refilled if you haven't run on petrol for a long stint

If you're not going to run the computer avoid the vct engine as you will have no benefit from variable cam timing, without the ecu controlling it the vct solenoid just stays in one position
  24. Thom

    Thom's 4.0l thread

The vct head is a different casting to all other heads it has different oil passages and a mount for the vct solenoid, the au xr6hp (non vct) is a slightly different head from the standard au heads, it has larger exhaust valves, slightly better ports and a smaller combustion chamber

    Diff gear

gli and futura Sedans went to 3.08 as a standard ratio from eb to au, fairmonts and fairlane were 3.23 standard, xr6 and 6 cylinder fairmont ghia were 3.45's xr8 (and 5.0l in general) had 3.23 open diffs until el then xr8 came standard with 3.45, but most ratios were optional and available in all models
