  1. I was under the impression that the 3 speed is a top loader gearbox with 4th gear not installed.

And yes, I would be doing it myself, other than drilling the hole/s, (as I don't own a drill press).

I was thinking the same thing about selling it afterwards.

I haven't seen a local swap meet here in the year and a bit I've been livin here, looks like I'm gonna need to do the occasional weekend road trip I guess.

  2. What's a fair price for a T5 bellhousing? I been offered one (when it gets pulled out of the car it's in) and the fella just wants me to make an offer.

But it's gotta come from Victoria, so I don't wanna be forking out heaps for a bellhousing I'm only goin to use temporarily, till the 4 litre has been freshened up (starting that job this weekend).

Then the XF will have already been converted to manual, one less thing to deal with when I do the engine swap.

I was also offered a XC 3 speed top loader bellhousing for $30, not sure if I should just grab the XC bell and modify, or wait for the other one and pay a fair bit more (I'm guessing)...

    Decisions decisions.

  3. Yeah mate, that's definetly it then.

Might just drain the oil in it and pop the hat off to check what ratio is stamped on the crown wheel instead, gotta be tricky picking a 3.23 and 3.45 by counting the turns...

Plus I can check it's condition while it's open.

Just outta curiosity, what is the approved lubricant they say to use, and is there a better lube that will work better than the 1 they recommend?

  4. Hi all, can anyone tell me if I need to get Falcon ute buckets certified/mod plated if I swap the bench seat out.

I just want to use standard seats, maybe later model, but no mods to them.

Don't want a floor shift manual and bench seat is all...

  5. Yeah ive been reading a bit of Thoms stuff over the last week, he certainly knows his stuff.

And to be honest, i could use a bit of help with this one.

And i heard that about the EA cams slight bigger lobes. This site is great for that stuff!

Theres a couple of things that i need to sort on the motor, like putting the dizzy back in, as they sold the original, and the idle control motor off the top of the throttle body is missing (it might be in one of the tubs of bits and pieces) looks the same as the one off my EB 3.9 motor, so if its gone...

For now, im just trying to get info on whether it needs a mod plate to be legal, and how im gonna get the motor and box off the back of my ute without a engine crane or block & tackle...

  6. Hey guys, was just after some info on mod plate's.

Im about to embark on a 93 model 4 litre conversion into my 88 XF ute, and i was hoping to find someone else here in Qld (or anywhere really) that had recently had this conversion done or road worthied?

I will be using an entire stock XG driveline, T5 and 3.23 LSD, with only 2.25 or 2.5 inch exhaust (i still need to measure it) being added, no extractors though.

Being that the 2 different model utes are basically still the same car (and nothing will be cut or welded to fit the conversion), i dont see why it would need a plate, as even the OHC's emissions would have to be better than the carbied crossflows...

Did anyone else need to mod plate or engineer this conversion, as im sure plenty others have done it?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks. Jay.

  7. Lol, my civic had 393000 when I got it, and it had a snapped timing belt, blown clutch, shot UCA bushes, and that was just so I could drive it the 1st time.

Thanks Ando, I'm gonna go have another look tomorrow.

    So far, so good though.

I turned the motor over by hand today, no binding, grinding or anything really...

I pulled the plugs and had a look down to the piston tops, and they look alright, minimal carbon build up, oil is bang on the right level, and looks/smells fine, could use a change (which shall happen soon).

The plugs look alright, but it looks like 2 different plugs were used 3 are longer at the electrode and 3 about 1mm shorter...

Dunno what they were thinking there! Lol

  8. Yeah I know they're alright, but for all the shit I copped over it, I can't really say I was a proud Honda driver.

But then it was just a 90 Civic hatch (ED6) twin carb SOHC 1.5 (D15B4 engine) and 5 speed, went hard for what it was, and handled like a little club racer...

I knew about there help in developing the crossy head, kinda how Yamaha did the head on my 1JZ motor.

(I have a bit of a soft spot for Jap cars)

  9. I do like the LPG idea, but as you said, gas isnt readily available everywhere, and being out in the sticks, petrol stations can be few and far between.

And I'm kinda on a tight budget, I've got a few leftover bits from a 3.9 motor (head bolts, head gasket kit, valve stem seals and what not, so I was thinking of pulling the head for a gasket and bolt swap, and just a general going over (filters, gaskets, maybe new water pump and that while it's out) as it is only 168k on it and just swap the entire fuel setup, looms, dash, steering column... The lot pretty much, get it running and legal (I assume a mod plate will be needed here in Qld), and then maybe look towards a low boost turbo setup.

Maybe (when my budget gets better) get a AU gas motor and build that up for a big turbo setup later down the track.

  10. True, wish I checked this before I left... Lol

Nah, I gotta go back to get fuel lines, a swaybar link and the trans hump (and maybe the part where the clutch cable goes through the firewall).

I got the whole lot to fit in the old XF, she wasn't happy go over the mountain side all arvo.

Looking forwards to getting it all goin!

  11. Well, all didn't go quite exactly to plan, but I must say, I'm pretty happy with my new driveline.

The trailer thing kinda fell through, so yesterday I fired up the old XF and went for an hour and a half drive out to go get this XG gear.

I arrived to see a 90% stripped out XG shell, and all my parts laid out ready to load. I ended up throwing old mate an extra $50 for his efforts, so all up I got it all for $350 (plus about $40 in fuel). Bargain I reckon!

Still going to go back to grab the fuel lines, trans hump, one of the swaybar links, and maybe the front suspension (didn't have the right tools, and I didn't take any cause I needed the space)

Everything looks good, apart from being caked in reddish brown dirt and oil from a leaky rocker cover.

Only just fit everything into the ute, diff, motor & box (still joined), tailshaft, swaybar, fuel tank, wiring looms, dash & steering column, radiator & shroud, coolant tank, power steering box, ECU... You get the idea! Lol
