93 XG running gear into 88 XF ute

Hi all, I'm about to go strip an XG Falcon for its 4 litre, T5, diff and electrics to convert into my 4.1 carby XF ute. Can anyone here please tell me any little things that I need to do this conversion successfully? The ute I'm stripping is an hour and a half away, and rather than tow the whole car home, I'll be dismantling it at the place of purchase, so I'd like to get it all in one trip. Other than the obvious bits (looms, engine, box, diff, ECU, radiator, power steering, pedal box and cable, engine mounts, crossmember, exhaust, engine bay components, fuel tank, steering column and dash) is there anything I have overlooked. It would suck to be almost done and get stuck cause I'm missing something critical... And has anyone recently done this conversion and got it registered in Qld, would love to hear how it all goes with the legalitys of this swap. Thanks in advance. Jay.

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Anyone tell me how to put photos up, so if I do a thread I can put up some pics as I go?

Well, all didn't go quite exactly to plan, but I must say, I'm pretty happy with my new driveline. The trailer thing kinda fell through, so yesterday I fired up the old XF and went for an hour and a half drive out to go get this XG gear. I arrived to see a 90% stripped out XG shell, and all my parts laid out ready to load. I ended up throwing old mate an extra $50 for his efforts, so all up I got it all for $350 (plus about $40 in fuel). Bargain I reckon! Still going to go back to grab the fuel lines, trans hump, one of the swaybar links, and maybe the front suspension (didn't have the right tools, and I didn't take any cause I needed the space) Everything looks good, apart from being caked in reddish brown dirt and oil from a leaky rocker cover. Only just fit everything into the ute, diff, motor & box (still joined), tailshaft, swaybar, fuel tank, wiring looms, dash & steering column, radiator & shroud, coolant tank, power steering box, ECU... You get the idea! Lol

93 XG running gear into 88 XF ute

Damn it, I have to go get it in pieces... Sucks living out in the sticks sometimes! Anyway, is there anything off the actual body I should cut and pull out? Like the top radiator support panel? I've heard it's different to the XF for the XG radiator to mount too.

    XF T5 bellhousing

Thanks mate, if I can find a cheap one I'll grab it. Otherwise I'll just leave it till I do the 4 litre conversion. Should have an XG sitting here tomorrow if all goes as hoped...

Cheers mate. Looks like it may not be an issue, old mate reckons he will deliver it for $400 now, so I'm all over it now.

Thanks for the handy info Ando81, and trust me, I can't give it to him any quicker, or I would have already for sure! Lol Looks like this deal is just getting better! Fella that's selling it just got a XR6 for his brother, and therefore had to hire a trailer. So now I'm getting the whole thing delivered (an hour and a half away) for $400 by the look of it. Can't wait to get stuck in! Just waiting to chat with anyone that's done this type of swap recently here in Qld and if they had to get it mod plated or anything???

    XF T5 bellhousing

So it would work with a drilled and tapped hole like you were saying? Would any of the X series crossflow 3 speed bellhousings be alright to use, or only the XF one?

93 XG running gear into 88 XF ute

Yeah I forgot to write swaybar.... The trailer place I found that's local (I think) appear to only have 1200kg car trailer. Surely an XG ute with half the interior and front bumper missing is still goin to weigh more than that? Or do you guys think it would be alright?

93 XG running gear into 88 XF ute

I'm trying to do it that way, just being out in the sticks, I'm not exactly spoiled for choice with trailers or tilt tray company's... And don't really have the extra funds to just bite the bullet and pay whoever will do it...

Anyone? All good, I guess it's probably been covered several times before on here. I just keep finding conflicting info on some things. Cheers.

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Thanks Thom for clearing that up, I keep getting mixed responses to that question. Is it true that I should use a T5 throw out bearing, something about proper alignment issues??? Unfortunately I can't take it for a quick test drive, as the fella I'm buyin it off has pulled the dizzy out of the motor. The body and interior are stuffed, but it has the dash, electrics and running gear which has less than 170k on them, so I'm hoping they're fine still. Should I cut out the section where the clutch cable comes through the firewall? My XF ute is an auto, so I think it's blank there (too wet to go look right now).

    XF T5 bellhousing

That would be great if you could. What's the goin rate for a 3 speed bell?

Thanks heaps for the info guys, got a fair idea what I'm gonna do now. Cheers

Yeah, that was booting it, sorry, I should have been more specific...

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

And I still get my T5 box (let's face it, manuals are way more fun to drive). Will the single rail clutch kit I have be able to be used on the 4.0 and T5 combo still?

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Well with the 2.92 and borg warner 35 auto, I'm revving at about 2500 at 100, and it struggles down at lower speeds. 1st gear changes to 2nd almost straight away, 2nd winds out to about 70-75kph, then into 3rd. Drinks fuel like it has it's own refinery in the tray! So I thought a 5 speed should help, but now I've been offered a whole XG for about the same $$$ as a T5 conversion costs. I'm thinking all that lovely torque the 4 litre makes will work well in a lighter XF shell...

    XF T5 bellhousing

So in theory, the bellhousing can be bolted to the block separately, and then the box afterwards?
  19. XFute-1JZsoarer

    XF T5 bellhousing

That makes it a little trickier. I thought it would be like the single rail I pulled the bellhousing off yesterday, it has them tapped into the box...

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Yeah sorry bout that, I thought it was an XH but it turned out to be XG. Thanks for the info, should go together alright I think.
  21. XFute-1JZsoarer

    XF T5 bellhousing

Thanks for that mate, that's kinda helpful. I'm also lookin at swapping the 4 litre engine at some point down the track. So don't want to invest too much into a bellhousing. Are the holes tapped in the bellhousing? I thought the box had the holes tapped? Appreciate the input, cheers.

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Cheers mate. 1 other thing, is it difficult to put the XG diff in, I'm assuming it's disc brake, and my XF is a 2.92 drum brake open ended. I'm not even sure what the standard ratio is in the XG or if it's different in T5 equipped XG's
  23. XFute-1JZsoarer

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

Just been offered a whole XH ute with a T5 in it for $300, only has 168k on the odo and fella said the body is rooted... I know the bellhousing won't fit a crossflow, but if I found an XF T5 bellhousing, that box would bolt straight on yeah? Is the diff a straight swap? And is there any worth to dropping the 4.0l engine in later down the track. The ute is only down the road, and I can strip it there, old mate will get the body scraped. Does it sound like a good way to go? As I'm on a tight budget at the moment...

    Borgy 5 speed (not T5)

So for general duties behind a stock carby 4.1 it should suffice till I get another box a little further down the track. It's a shame, cause I'd like to bolt up a set of extractors and 2.25 inch exhaust, and an intake manifold. Guess the can wait till I find a decent box... You think the stock 2.92 diff won't cause too much strain on it if I take it easy in 1st gear?
