    Budget upgrades for the DIY

chuck a fan belt on top of the air cleaner element and close the lid on it, itll leave a nice gap between for the lid. I bought a XF van on gas and they had done this trick to it pretty cheap.

    what is log?

log motor is more of an american term for the pre crossflows isnt it?

    What speedo gear?

thanks guys! speedometer apps rock, ive got a jeep that reads 7% lower than the speedo states i found, only realize this after getting a fine after doing the speed limit on the fwy.

    What speedo gear?

hi guys, if you change your rims to a larger diameter tyre, going from 14" to 15" do you need to go down teeth on the cogs? scored a nice set of 15 csa globe copies and definitely want to fit them on the XC since 14" tyres are getting pricey in WA and limited sizes i think ive got a pink cog in my single rail box atm, for the 2.92 diff ratio [pretty sure i pulled out a green one from the three speed manual with the 2.77 diff, honestly cant remember, too many sleepless nights with a newborn]

    XF EFI head question

Heyas! went up to my uncles farm recently and hes got a XF S Pac single rail with the EFI crossy, just recently took it off the road as he split a hose and it heated up as he got home and the tailshaft is dodgy. the car is in pretty good nick for a country car. told him i have a tailshaft at home from the XC that was in my 3 speed and fits the single rail and he told me that one of the spark plug threads in the head is a little too loose for his liking. i offered to buy it and hes keen, he just wants to keep the hotwires that are on it the bastard is there any tips someone can give about getting the thread sorted out to get this thing home? i can get a permit to drive it, the trips about 2hrs over the ranges east of perth. the other question is that i have a alloy headed xflow at home, im pretty sure its a D2 casting head, can i swap the heads over without causing much trouble with the EFI etc?? Im gonna pop it off my engine this week and give it a clean up as its been sitting without manifolds on so i hope i dont run into too much trouble :/

    XF EFI head question

ha im probably wrong on the casting of the head at home, out here on the mine getting my brain scorched. thanks for the info on the chaser, ill definitely try that one. ha id take a set of tyres up there next time i go and bring it back on a permit if i get it going, housemate would have kittens with car number 4 arriving tho. hahah

    The Holley Thread

heres my handful of change... tune a holley with a quality vacuum gauge [either from the base of the carb or on the manifold, i use the brake booster port on the manifold, for the idle tuning turn your air/air fuel mixture screws out on each side 1/4 of a turn at a time and keep going until you get the highest possible reading. once i cant get the reading any higher and it seems to stumble a bit ill back it off to just before i could get the highest reading. keep both screws wound in/out the same. choose a powervalve that is roughly half your vacuum reading, rounded down, say you get 14hg reading from your manifold vacuum port, you should use a 6.5 power valve. if you have to turn the air/air fuel mix screws out over 2 full turns you may need larger jets, if you have to turn them to one turn or less, you may need smaller jets.
  9. ^i did that to my diff mounts the other week after they had been sitting exposed for a while after being hot tanked. worked a treat getting the surface rust off.
  10. citric acid is a fantastic degreaser, really helps get into the red dirt from ex mining vehicles or bush trips. a <10% mix of sulphuric acid [and water] is great for cleaning carbon and crap off steel and alloy rims, just dont leave it on for too long [i used to let it sit for 15 mins max, if it spotted the alloy rims from being on too long id scrub it off and spray it on again lol]

    Drop base Air filter.

i was running a drop base on the holley 350 on my XC xflow and it sat on the carby and fouled on the linkages. i bought a 1 1/2" air cleaner spacer and it worked a treat, just gave enough clearance for the carb and linkages etc and i was able to stick a 14" x 3" air cleaner under the bonnet. http://www.kustombitz.com.au/p/4455983/plastic-air-cleaner-spacer-riser-ring-1-12-inch-tall-4-barrel-5-18-inch-holley---torco.html

    hydrocoating water paint

lol @ one of the comments on the page was a article on this in perth street car mag, so many more options than just painting things now
  13. i unscrewed the nylon bush to replace it with the alloy one and thought while i was there i should replace the saddle too, the saddle was a marginally worn compared to the new one. im pretty sure mines a XE 6 cyl box too, 83DA-7003-BA 0503-039, possibly a late model box??? i say go with it if youre gonna replace the box later, if youre worried maybe just put a lil sleeve where the saddle would go on that shaft, by the look in the pics, the red saddle looks about the same size as the shaft itself.
  14. i bought a large XC single rail shifter saddle from parts lunacy on ebay, the blue one and it fit my single rail perfectly, mine is a 83DA box too im sure. i didnt know how to fit it so i took the old saddle off the shaft inside the box and put the new one on. seemed to be a perfect replacement.

    crossflow porting results

Cheers for the answer clevo120y, i have been reading your air flow bench thread too, i must say all of your posts are very inspirational. All i have really done to my crossflow was clean up some of the casting lines in a manifold with my little rotary drill and rough them back up, might have to invest in a bigger set up as reading these makes me want to learn a lot more about the process and its great that youre showing us how you check your work to see that youre on the right track, thank you! yeah safetys a big one, i used to go bare foot around most of my jobs, after months of treading on little wires from teh wire wheels and increasing my pain tolerance and possibly tetanus hah i had a lucky scare with a crossflow rolling off a tyre i placed it on [still chained up] and luckily stopping on the base of a engine crane with my ankle between it and the floor. boots for the big jobs now [if it ever happens again at least it wont scratch the shit out of my leg]. ive paid good money for laser surgery and always use glasses and ear plugs are a definite must with power tools if you want to hear in the future. PPE is pretty cheap and very accessable, i always have a stack to hand out to mates aswell, spesh when a few are giving me a hand, that way we all can look stupid together and enjoy a few beers instead of hospital trips hahha

What kind of tools do you use to do the head and manifiold work? that is if we are privy to these secrets. Thank you for sharing all of your processes, i have found them to be extremely interesting

    ADR 27a

Hey Guys, Starting to finish up the v8 conversion, hooking all the emissions gear up. can i get away without using the EGR? how does it work anyway, i said on my modification application that id be using the factory emissions gear and reading some of the factory schematics it seems that post 76 falcons had EGR's, i guess i can sneak it between the manifold and spacer for the carby. Can you hook up a holley 4150 600cfm to it at all?

    ADR 27a

wow thanks for the response fellas! damn emissions!!! ive got the EGR plate off of a black block engine, its just a spacer with 2 slots cut in for the primary/secondaries and a hole to the vacuum diaphragm, pretty basic. since im hoping to set up ram air for the cobra scoop and using a factory air cleaner base and a 14" diameter lid; i dunno how cluey the local licensing centre is [prob go to welshpool in perth] and ill have the emissions cannister and vac lines all hooked up. i may just attach the egr to the spacer coz id hate to go back and forth from these places, paying up each time. this is the spacer i have [lol i think ive mentioned it was a 2" previously, its a 1"], note the flat side of it... the other 3 sides are indented like the second pic. i reckon i could mount it to the flat side and have it part of the set up and let them bust me for something else like noise or a full ashtray [yes, cops in WA will sticker your car for that as it is a fire hazard to have a full ashtray] sorry bout the big massive pics.

    ADR 27a

sweet ill try that, i was thinking of how to butcher the 4 holed spacer to make the back of the egr fit it lol
  20. Hey Blu XE, what was the epoxy panel bond you used?? im about to put a cobra scoop on my xc and am a lil concerned about putting it directly onto baremetal with fibreglass and then bog over it. hopefully i can find clamps big enough to hold the scoop down as opposed to a board with some bricks on it LOL.
  21. someone would make big $$ if they print out copies of the VSB's and gets a JP or police officer to sign off on them to carry around in our glove boxes for these idiotic cops

    Holley carby?

yerp, holley 2 barrels and 4 barrels take the same sized filter. the bigger the filter you get the better [14x2 is the minimum id go with]

    XC xflow swap

So i finally got the mongrel started, got hold of a XE dizzy without a vacuum, so uncle showed me how to put one on after he pulled out a box of dizzys, bit of messing around trying to stop these old boys from trailing off and getting distracted. then he gave me a MEC coil to go with it. got the wiring sorted and everything. extractors finish under the seat, with a 2.5" pipe at the end of the merge. lol its loud, too loud hey, ive got to drive it back to my new place before i fly home monday, might take the coast road since its limit is 80kms and the freeway/carpark is up to 100. pisses about a bit when you back off but theres no smoke and i think the timings great, bout 8, thats if i have the dizzy on the right tooth. so after all this my uncle turns around and shows me a rebuilt 351 thats got 4v valves, roller rockers, 4mab crank, balanced that they built for a guy who never took it, 4k and its mine. lol funny how things work out hey. so im just getting the car home only to take the engine out again and put all the v8 conversion gear in hahhaha i keep saying to my mate once this is done im not touching it anymore but we both know im a filthy liar.

    XC xflow swap

Hey guys, So my XC's cast iron crossy finally let its head gasket go and gave me a milkshake, all while im meant to be vacating a rental, im flying home early to put the spare engine into it, which is a alloy head xflow from a XF panel van. Ive got a set of alloy extractors and a alloy pattern redline torker to put my holley on to. Leaving the 3 speed manual in for now since the single rail is at the new house. Anything i should keep a eye out for? like the fuel pump not working with the xc lines or what not? im guessing its a bolt in job. ill be taking a few pics and doing a write up for it after the fact. cheers
