Ok, ive just ordered this XF transducer http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-GENUINE-FORD-SPEEDO-TRANSDUCER-XF-EA-EB-ED-EF-EL-AU-BA-BF/220917249610?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649
I know it wont give the same reading as an XE but ive got no other choice (cant find an old one).
The problem is this has a plug but my XE just has the wires so im not sure which wire is which on the transducer...Theres white, black and blue in that order if youre looking directly front on to the tooth gear with the clip at the back and the wire loom hanging down. Hope that makes sense ha ha.
-
Ahh yes, reverse switch...but which wire is which on the transducer? Are you saying from left to right is earth, 8v, signal? And what way are you looking at it?
Thanks. -
Alrighty, so ive got two working clusters now and one of the two transducers is defo not working...
Ive got five wires going under the floor, across the top of the transmission and im not sure exaclty where they should be going. So, three are for the transducer and what are the other two for? I think theyve been mixed up? And what are each of the three on the transducer? Im guessing the outside two are the 8V and the middle is the signal? -
Yeah, i really dont want to get rid of it...
Ive changed the cluster and the transducer before but still nothing (although not sure if they work). Anyawy, i found a place today in Sydney that does instruments and taken it all to them. They reckon they can fix it all so once they are working, i can go from there.
Thanks.

Hey fellas,
Just got back from overseas and am back onto the issue...im stuck as to what i should try. Should i just sell the thing and hope someone will buy it? Can anyone recommend a bloke in Sydney to take it to? Im worried she wont pass rego with this issue.
Much appreciated, cheers -
Righteo!...
So ive sussed the original instrument PCB and im pretty sure the diodes are shot (Its sending 12V to the transducer). I got a spare dash and plugged it in and it gave the 7/8V. Connected it all up and still not speedo/odo. I then changed the trandsucer that i got off ebay (not 100% that its working though) and still not working.
Not sure what else to try??
-
The loom has definitely got 12V on it so im currently trying to investigate that issue. It seems the car has been rewired over the years and the colours dont match whats described in the Gregorys...alot of tracing to be done!
-
Over a week later and im still got some issues...
The new spark plugs have all got carbon on them again. What could it be? Are they not getting fired correctly? Maybe i should change the leads? How do i check the ignition coil is outputting the correct voltage??
Still got a strong petrol smell coming from somewhere but cant pin it. And tonight a whole heap of black water came out the exhaust! Cant win. Im regrettably thinking id better get rid of this. Ive loved working on it but i cant enjoy it yet
-
Underfelt is dry too...Ill check the hose connections at the firewall.
Can you point me in the direction of the heater core? And where are the floor drain plugs?
-
Something must be leaking but its completely dry until a decent drive so i guess its heating up and steaming through?
Shes got no rust and it definitely happens after a week of no rain... -
Gday, gday,
Ive noticed after a decent drive (more than ten minutes) theres water coming through the carpet on both sides! Ive had a good look underneath and cant feel any moisture at all...what would be running under neath and coming through as the car heats up? And this is regardless of rain.
Thanks! -
Finally all put back together and seems like its running better...either way it was a good experience.
Im still not sure that its set up correctly but ill keep thinking about it. If anyone from Sydney who knows a bit about them wants to come and give me a hand, let me know what beer you like..

Ha ha, didnt realise.

Cheers, Ive seen that but doesnt really explain the operation of the cam steps etc.
And does anyone know about the idle screw in my photo? Surely it shouldnt be all the way in?
How exactly do i set the correct fuel/air mixture? Im thinking the lingering smell of petrol has something to do with this....
Sorry for all the questions, i really appreciate the help fellas!
-
Can someone give me an explanation as to how the throttle arm and cam works in relation to the chokes and fuel/air mixture? Ive been searching for hours but cant get my head around it still.
Hopefully the carb repair kit arrives tomorrow...
-
Yeah, ill have to have another crack...Id say its gotta be the transducer but fucked if ill be able to find an XE one. Might have to settle with an XF part.
-
The connector plug between the transducer and the wiring loom has 12/13Vs on it??!!
-
Cool, ill test it out
-
-
Righteo...so i reckon it looks like it has been cut (theres nothing really on there apart from a short pin which looks chopped) as it idles no worries.
Ive bought this kit and ive got the Gregorys to put it together so i should be ok (waiting for it to arrive). Will one of those compressed air cans suffice to clean it out?
Im trying to get my head around the valve and idle timing...Ive read alot online and in the manual but i think the manual is describing a slightly different carby to mine?
The fast idle screw is the one against the cam? And the larger screw at the bottom with the spring is the idle speed screw? As you can see, it is all the way in and is not hitting the lever...surely thats not right? Also the third of the three studs in at the top of the housing has broken off which will not stop the cam. Not sure how i can get around that...

i gave a lot of stuff like that away rather than chucking it out at least
No worries

Is the plunger the little spike that sits inside and is on the spring of the solenoid? Cut that off? So its not blocking flow?
What does it actually do though?

the speedo has a trim adjustment, but it wont make a 20% difference i dont think.
wont matter if it was 6 or 8 only the tacho will be out if it doesnt match(that is adjustable but i havent dont it yet)
i have an 8 pulse XD/XE sender here if you get stuck.. would have to check it before i was comfortable sending it though(been buried in a box of junk for 10 years.)
Still got the 8 pulse transducer available?
