  1. Definitely check the fuel cutout solenoid on the side of the carbi. If that is playing up the car will stall when your foot is off the accelerator. It has a wire connected and what i have done in the past is just put a jumper lead on the positive of the battery and then tap it on the connector on the carbi a couple of times to "free" it up a bit. If it doesnt make a tapping sound when you do that it is completely dead. If you take the solenoid out and replace it with a short bolt i think that will just bypass that system. (But i believe the point of having that solenoid is to stop run on... I never found it to be a massive problem tho)

    i found a pic

it is the spade connector in the right, for some reason on this carby the connector is bend up...

  2. Other than what you have said you will need the sway bar. But definitely try and get the whole car home... Servo's often have trailers for hire.. that's what i used to do although i only live 30min out of Toowoomba. so wasnt that far just to take it back in after I got the car home..

  3. Mate I put one of those in a 4.1L xf and i think it only lasted a month or 2. Never did a burnout or anything crazy, and mostly highway kms. Was slowing down to veer off the highway, put her into 3rd at probably 60-80 and accelerated around the slight corner and then BANG, and then a THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP-THUMP noise in third, shifted to 4th and no problems, then into 5th did the same as 3rd. If fact anything that wasnt 4th was making the noise and the car shake violently! So I had to drive home and up the driveway in 4th :) I wouldn't even bother putting it in temporarily... hold onto the auto until you get a single-rail at least. There should be heaps about, i've got a few lying around!

  4. Can you just put the indicator stalks out of the ute into the xf? I've tried to put xf stalks into an xd before and never got it to work properly. the windscreen wipers and high beam wires must be different between the models... so if you can use the old stalks will save you alot of messing around.
