Ando81 2,949 Posted May 17, 2013 Hey fellas, just wanted to check my oil level in my xf t5 gearbox and I don't have a hoist. Was thinking if I jacked up the drivers side of my ute and checked it that it may seem a little low because of the angle that the ute will be on. I will prob top it up until it runs out of the bung although it may be a little overfull, surely more is better than less oil. Anyone got any better suggestions? Just checking it because it sometimes can be difficult to select first and third gears. I am hoping that it is as simple as low fluid and not a bent selector fork. Cheers for any input! revhead 1,392 Posted May 17, 2013 you could jack up your car front n rear and let it down onto car stands to make it level and yes dribbling out of the filler hole is plenty
Mr Polson 10,214 Posted May 17, 2013 Some Nulon G70 in with the fluid will help shifting, pretty sure it's good for the gearbox too!!
Thom 6,650 Posted May 17, 2013 I've always found with t5's they're nicer to shift with dextron IIrather than dexrton III
revhead 1,392 Posted May 17, 2013 i used transmission fluid in my las t5 ,it ran fine for 2 years and it was an EA box behind a 351 i found with heavier oils the t5 isnt user friendly when cold! 1 Thom reacted to this
Ando81 2,949 Posted May 18, 2013 Thanks for the input, a bloke said to me that he used tq95 auto trans fluid in his. Anyone else used it? I think its a Castrol oil. 1 revhead reacted to this
adrianphu123 73 Posted May 18, 2013 I use dex3 by valvoline i think, its a red bottle and i add a small bottle of penrite lubrizol. And make sure your clutch is completely disengaging.
KRUPTOR 929 Posted May 18, 2013 TQ95,or ATF MHP Penrite are some oils you use in the 4spd BTR boxes.T5's use a dexron style oil with and additive aswell.
thunderbolt 150 Posted May 18, 2013 if ya over fill manuals all that usally happens is they spit oil out the breather i abuse the shit out of my T5 its yet to shit (the only thing i don't do it full on clutch dumps) i use dextron 3 and lubrizol additive (special additive for T5 gear boxes )
Ando81 2,949 Posted May 19, 2013 if ya over fill manuals all that usally happens is they spit oil out the breather i abuse the shit out of my T5 its yet to shit (the only thing i don't do it full on clutch dumps) i use dextron 3 and lubrizol additive (special additive for T5 gear boxes ) Cheers mate, I will go with some of that. My engine is all stock so shouldn't have to worry bout killing it, I don't dump the clutch, just carry a bit of weight in the tub from time to time so it should hold together for a few more years. Ando81 2,949 Posted March 19, 2014 So I've got the oil level sorted now, just wondering if anyone has trouble selecting first gear and reverse in their t5 box. Mine can be a bastard to get into reverse. I realise there is no synchro on it but sometimes I really have to jerk it in. And sometimes at traffic lights I put it in neutral while I'm stopped and when I go to select first gear to drive away it can need extra force to get it to go in also. I have the clutch adjusted up nice and firm so am not sure what it is. Have read somewhere that it can be a worn part on the selector or something.
gerg 10,871 Posted March 19, 2014 Sounds like your pilot bearing isn't spinning freely enough, causing your input shaft to turn with the engine, even though the clutch is disengaged. Try this: when crawling along , pop it into neutral then back into 1st. If it goes into gear nicely, then that eliminates bent shift forks or rails. Try the other gears at rest as well. Ando81 2,949 Posted March 19, 2014 Ok mate, will give it a go tomorro. Any other gear goes in easy from standing start. What you suggest makes a lot of sense.
XTREME KARTS XF 1,212 Posted March 19, 2014 Correct me if im wrong but isn't TQ95 mineral based and dexron synthetic based? I've always been told to use dexron III, heavy gearbox oil will kill a T5 over time!
Ando81 2,949 Posted March 19, 2014 Tq95 is like water mate. I've been told not to go from mineral to synthetic coz synthetic can be hard on seals, more so than mineral oil. Just what I've heard anyway. 1 XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
gerg 10,871 Posted March 19, 2014 Factory Ford manual says ATF DIII with lubrizol additive. I would use Nulon G70 as a substitute. 2 Ando81 and XTREME KARTS XF reacted to this
