Brake caliper rebuild.

Recommended Posts

Hello all.

I'm still slowly getting through the work on my XC.

I've removed the original front PBR calipers and given them a thorough clean up, but I'm thinking about getting them professionally refurbished by a brake expert instead...

Thoughts please? 🤔

Unless there's pitting or chrome peeling on the piston seal surface or in the groove where the seal goes, there's not much to worry about. A bit of soft scotchbrite will bring up all the important areas. Just a tube of rubber grease for assembly and you're there.

Agree. Unless you can see rust or pitting on the piston, clean it up and reuse it, new seal kit, lots of rubber grease. (it's castor oil based, IIRC, so it dilutes with brake fluid. Normal grease won't). Twist the piston in one hand, with the scotchbrite in the other hand. Dont rub up and down the surface, go around the circumference, if that makes sense. Don't make little tiny grooves for the fluid to get past the seal.
