AU IRS into XG ute....Is it Possible?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys just wondering if anyone knew if the IRS set up out of an AU could be made to work on an XG ute.

I'm after IRS as I have a project in mind that runs IRS shafts.

i haven't seen any updates on this for YEARS (not even sure the photos are even still there)

but it was done on a COUPE(much more room under the gaurds)

it wasn't THAT hard to fit, but naturally not a bolt in..

ooh, recent ish updates, and some pics showing..

i haven't come across it being done other than this one.. consensus was it's super heavy, doesn't work well and not needed.

Ford did a watts-link coil spring EA wagon prototype, which I have pic's of.

The IRS suspension ages badly IMO - think Ford Territory, but not quite as bad.

When they age, they develop very unpredictable handling.

Ford has obsoleted the AU IRS suspension bushes.

They weren't available aftermarket either, being special void bushes.

(may be available now, not sure)

In my experience the Ford leaf spring rear's, age 100 times better compared to IRS,

and are much more controllable in the event of lost traction - ie, wagons around corners, in wet weather.

Cheers Sparky, I don't particularly want IRS , it just makes the mods I want to do easier.
I will keep searching for a solution...
Always something.

Even the watts-link suspension in XE-AU, handles un-predicably once the bushes wear,

although not quite as bad, as the IRS.

Replacement bushes are available aftermarket, I believe?

Maybe a B-series or FG IRS rear?

I think bushes are available those still also.

It's ok Sparky, after a bit of brain crunching I found a way to make it work with a live axle rear.

Just needs a bit of engineering but doable.

I will reveal all later in the year or early next year....hehehe.

I may still need to go IRS but at least I know now to get it from a later model if I do. Thanks for your help. :)

Is that the pick up point at the front? It looks like a bolt through the rail to a link for the cradle?

I've got a guess for what you're thinking about but maybe I'll just wait and see if I got it right 🤫

yeah you might be right. the pickup is bolted through the rail.

Cheers Fellas, it's an idea I have but it's a very expensive idea, but requires an IRS to make it work properly.
That looks quite doable. Maybe be the cheapest part.
I don't need the diff just the shafts, arms, coil overs ,stub axles,hubs/brakes and sub frame.
I've been pricing everything else up and it is double what I thought it would cost, just trying to decide if its worth doing when I could buy a fairly new car for the same money.

Would be a bitchin project though......

Cheers for all your help on the IRS fellas. :)

Hi everyone. I have done this swap into an xf wagon. The front leaf mounting points can be used for the front pickups of the IRS. And all that needs to be made is the rear cradle mount. And the strut mount. The way I did this was very fabrication heavy. I had clearance issues between the strut and the chassis. I'll include a photo to show what I did to make it work.

I only made an account to share this with you all. I had trouble finding info when I started this project. Yep xg fuel tank. Barra up the front as well as au front subframe, steering rack, etc. Ba steering column. I might post a full build once it's completely finished.

I'd love to see a build thread on it,

there was an XE sedan(done in XF panels) in Tassie that had a full BA subframe graft with the boss 260? (one of the V8s) it was on another forum that is no longer active. that was engineered, but never got to see it finally finished

All that's left with mine are coilovers, wheels, tyres, a little bit of panel work and a turbo. Then I might post the whole build.

Interesting, I'm in TAS too. It would be good to see that thing and ask about how he went with engineering.
