Help IDing a 3speed.

Recommended Posts

I’ve got a 3 speed here we thought was Falcon, but it has a larger input shaft than my “labelled” one. We’re going to put it behind a ahem 3.8 V6 in a race car.
Dads curious as to what it is. Has 72DA-7093-AC 050-001-32426 on ID tag. I’ve tried google etc but have had no luck. Hopefully someone here knows how to decode it.

The first numbers are Ford Oz by the looks of it, the second lot of numbers look like BorgWarner. Any pictures would help a lot. If the input spline count is 10, it's a Falcon as far as I know. I'm not aware of any Falcon that came with bigger input shafts.

Just a stab in the dark: could it be from a locally assembled Jeep? They had Ford running gear for a while.

I was thinking Valiant until Dad gave me these numbers tonight. The 72DA is same prefix as on the "labelled" gearbox, but rest of numbers are different. I was thinking maybe F-100? He was gobsmacked as well as he was in the wrecking industry and has 40 years plus building/racing dirt track cars.

I was going to suggest F-series too, but wasn't sure if they used local boxes or imported ones. Maybe local if they were behind a 250?

Honestly don't know. Dad got it in a bulk speedway parts deal, sat in the shed for years waiting for a car to put it in. I "liberated" the pile of parts when I got this engine. Bellhousing I'm using is an auto bellhousing with an adapter plate on the back. Would be good to know if we need another clutch plate. One we have is very very average

You might be able to take the input shaft to a clutch specialist (if you have one local) and they might be able to identify/match a clutch hub to it. They used to do all that sort of stuff with Celica 5-speed conversions back in the day... Holden flywheel and pressure plate, Toyota clutch plate and pilot adaptor.

I think I may have answered my own question. Jumped on exedy.com.au and researched the clutch. Apparently there are 2 different splines in XY-XA gearboxes, a 24mm (standard) and a 27.5mm Heavy Duty box, some. Mustangs and F100s used same box. Just waiting on confirmation from Dad the spline diameter, but I'm pretty sure from the brief time I had the plate in my "labelled" box the slop would've been about right. I'll confirm when I hear back.

Well that's weird. Has normal 24mm spline, same as one that slipped straight in. I'm sure this joker must employ morons. Sooooo basically an epic waste of time/found out there's actually a larger spline box....

On a side note I've swapped my 3 speed for what I don't know, 4 or 5 speed. From the hazy description I got it sounds like a top loader 4.1 xd box. Is my 4.0l, or my aggressive driving style, going to destroy this first clutch dump?

There were no toploaders after XB, just the BW single rail. The one you described loosely resembles a toploader as it has a top plate and is of similar construction. It will have an alloy tail housing and the shifter is part of it, with a single shaft going forward into the main part of the box. A Toploader has 3 shafts sticking out the side which select 1-2, 3-4 and reverse. They're attached to levers and rods that connect to an external shifter. The tail housing is also cast steel or iron like the main case.

Cool, is it going to take some abuse? Apparently its had the shifter moved ahead to go in a racecar. I'll see when I get it this week (with any luck)
It might have a Cortina tail housing. They can handle a mild 302 or stock 351, depending on if it's a close ratio or wide. Close handles more torque. That said, if you abuse any box behind any engine you'll break it sooner or later. I had one behind a 250 in my Cortina and it lost 2 teeth off 2nd. I was a bit hard on it though, doing clutchless shifts like it was a truck.

a worn ANY gearbox ..won't handle a thrashing.. i blew up 3 worn single rails in a month with My standard 351.. i had one rebuilt(was a cortina box i used to reco) and it did 80,000kms trouble free with the same abuse.

check the oil in it, if it has NONE.. it's probably needing a selector rail seal.. and if it does have none, consider it needing a more careful driving style

Dad knows the box, he was the one that moved the shifter, it's done a season of hard racing already. It came out of a low mileage rotten XD 4.1. As to whether its close or wide I don't know. I work for Fuso/Mercedes/Freightliner truck dealership so have plenty of experienced technician's to rebuild it if need be. Just don't want to rebuild it if it's made of porcelain.....

XD 4.1 should have 3.48 first, which is a wide ratio.
